SE and S Central looking very dry from the air
Just returned this morning from another overseas trip and was struck
how dry and brown much of SE (especially eastern Essex and central London) England and South Central (especially near Newbury) England looked from the air, and it is only mid-July ! It would be interesting to get some ground reports from Essex...ping Keith ?? Cracking day today...max +27.2 deg. C (+1.5 deg. C 24-hr temp anomaly for the month so far). Newbury aye! I am from the very place and I would say the same.
Harvesting of corn yield has not yet started locally (had started by this time last year) and also I would say by looking at the crops, they may be suffering. The downs locally are looking brown where the grass is dying and soil surfaces are showing large cracks, including in my garden. Many butterflies are on the wing though and my garden is full of birds, also desperately drinking and bathing, so it seems these things do have a positive effect, sometimes. Talking of brown, my lawn in the front garden gave up the ghost ages ago;
despite heavy rainfall. The back garden has brown patches in the lawn, the green bits are the weeds and clover. Strange though, the grass seems to grow in the shade of the trees so methinks it is the strength of the sun that is killing off the grass. My runner beans nearly died the other day with the sun on them. I have had to cover them with shading netting to prevent the leaves burning. This never used to happen, the sun seems more fierce these days. Reached 28.8C here at 17:17. My monthly rainfall total for July currently stands at 0.0mm but one of my friends said that it did rain about a week or so ago here - can anyone confirm that? I haven't been out to check the rain gauge yet though.
