Hi, Stephen,

How do these stand compared with record daily extremes for this
country? I think Rickmansworth had 28.3C back in the 1930s, but did
Tulloch Bridge record -5C to 25C (30degC) sometime in the 1970s? There
must be ranges approaching these records during this current spell. I
wonder what Redhill's figures are - I assume it is still open, just not
used by Met O any more.

Copley Lead Mill had 25.6degC yesterday (1.9C min 27.5C max) and Copley
Met O site had 24.2degC (from 3.7C ,grass -3.3C, to 27.9C)

These large ranges remind me of the 1976 summer.

Think it was Tummel Bridge, -7C to 22C May 1978

I've never recorded more than a 19C daily range at my plateau site

Yes, I believe the Tummel Bridge value is the highest 'natural' diurnal
range (although I don't have a record of the exact values).

The highest official daily range at any UK site, i.e. 09-09h period,
known to me occurred at Altnaharra in the thaw immediately following
the equal-record low min on 30 Dec 1995. The min that morning was
-27.2°C; as the wind began to pick up it cleared the pools of cold air
nestling in the valleys and caused the temp at Altnaharra to rise a
remarkable 20.2 degC in 3 hours 1200-1500 GMT (-21.2°C to -1.0°C). By
next morning the screen temp had crept up to +2.1°C, making the daily
range 29.3 degC.

Ken - let me suggest you pen a note to COL and/or Weather on your
ranges at both your sites, which are probably within the top few
highest on record in UK. If you have a thermograph or AWS record too,
even better - I'm not aware of the Tummel Bridge value being so
documented.

Regards -- Stephen

snip
Daily range of 21.4 degC up here at Whipsnade, from 9.1 to 30.5,
which for what is essentially a hilltop site is quite remarkable. I've been
surprised at how cool the nights here have been during both hot
spells since I moved in last month. At the moment the only
instrumentation is in the garden which is located in a shallow dell
some 15m or so below the crest of the escarpment. I suspect that
may be sufficient to produce some big differences under radiation
conditions between this site and the intended observatory site on
the crest.

For Wokingham, the daily range on 17th was 21.0C, (10.5 to 31.5). This is
the second highest for July here in 31 years of record, the highest being
21.7C on 15th July 1990. The absolute highest daily range was 22.7C on 30th
June 1995.
My Rh did not fall below 20%, min 23% at 1411z.

My figures for my Davis AWS on the 18th of July are 32.8°C maximum and an
11.7°C minimum with a minimum RH of 21%.
The maximum here today is 33.7°C so far but the minimum last nightwas 13.5°C
so the range is unlikely to be greater today.

Since my station is in a sheltered back garden the temperatures are probably
slightly higher than would be seen from a more open location required for an
official site.

Alan
