Indoor conditions during this hot spell
 

Any reports of indoor temperature & RH during this hot spell?

Currently in Dartington we have +26.1 deg. C and RH 52%. This is
measured in a sunless north facing downstairs bedroom. Upstairs and on
the south side I would estimate more like +32 deg. C and RH probably
similar. Our house is well insulated which helps during this sort of
weather so long as windows and doors are kept shut and curtains/blinds
are closed.

Who is reporting the most oppressive indoor conditions ?

Currently 34C in the living room (with window open and west facing), and 28C
in the bedrooms (east facing). As for the humidity, I don't know but it
certainly is stifling.

Our house is highly insulated (and getting better as we are currently
insulating the floors). Problem is we have large windows and when the
sunlight shines through them the temperature soars in the room.

Now 22.3C at 22:30. Feels positively chilly outside compared to indoors.

I thought I was suffering with 28c in a north facing bedroom.

The living room the same temps, a through room aligned N - S at 32%
humidity.

Got that down to 85.5F at 01:39 by placing a fan blowing outwards near
the window

I had a max reading of 38.9C in my conservatory yesterday, North facing and
at the back of the house.
I have reflective blinds all around in there too - I guess they where
stretched to their limit ;)

Do you close the curtains? I open all the windows and doors when I wake up -
about five o'clock - then close them about nine. Curtains are kept closed
in sun-facing rooms. Yesterday I maxed at 26 downstairs.

I picked up the idea from a Pub I went to in the hot summer of 1975. At
midday, the temperature had already reached 27. I walked into the pub
through the typical entrance lobby. The outer door and doors to the bars
were all closed. When I walked into the bar I wondered whether I ought to
have brought a jacket with me it was so cold. I asked how they kept the pub
so cool and they explained the method. They also had the advantage of an
old building with very thick walls so it was well insulated. Soon after me,
a young lad walked in and left the door open. He seemed quite surprised
when everyone shouted at him - "SHUT THAT DOOR!"

I have noticed that a 10-15% change in humidity indoors makes a big
difference to how it 'feels' sitting in my living room. I have a small
instrument which displays temperature and humidity in the room. It is
well away from the windows and is never in sunlight. For much of
yesterday afternoon and evening it read 29C with humidity 38%. (This is
with windows open) I find that it tends to fall about 3 or 4 degrees
during the early hours and then rise slowly through the rest of the
morning, and remain constant from about 2pm until 11pm.

This morning it is reading 26C already and the humidity is 57%.
Although the temperature is 3 degrees lower than yesterday afternoon,
that increase in humidity means that I feel hotter now than I did all
through yesterday.

Not I. It's actually cooler indoors than out.

I have no air conditioning, and I have all the windows on the
north - west side of the house open when I'm inside, including
overnight.

It's like an oven in the attic, and in the garage.

Same tactics here and with 26 max downstairs yesterday (outside showed
31 but it's not screened, though not in the sun just placed where its
not going to be in the sun, wireless indoor/outdoor) - except that I
open windows not facing the sun, beautiful breeze hitting me now.

Isn't summer wonderful ! ;-)

I have all the windows open to keep cool, yet can hear, kids screaming,
car revving, people banging or sawing. All I want is to rest in the
evening and have a little nap. Some hope !

Now 30C with 50% humidity, but feeling far hotter than yesterday, 29C
38%
