Met Office has some funny idea on how to stay cool

From the Met Office advice page, "Keep your home as cool as possible —
shutting windows during the day may help. "

Now, I don't know about you lot, but for me shutting the windows on a
bloody hot day like today is the LAST thing I would consider to keep my
house cool with!!

I always keep mine shut (at least on the side of the house which catches the
sun), and the curtains drawn.

Most of the radiated heat is reflected, and heated air outside the window
(from the brickwork) doesn't find its way through the window.

A fan to keep the air moving in the room, and it's quite bearable.

Windows are opened on the shady side of the house, and all the windows
opened at night (out of burglars' reach, that is...).

Then you need to take heed of the Met Office's advice and my earlier
comments in another thread. To save you searching for it I'll repeat the
advice. Have all the windows open during the coldest part of the day
(around dawn) to cool the house down. If you can safely leave some windows
open overnight this will help. When the external temperature rises to a
point near where no further cooling of the house can be achieved, probably
by nine o'clock, close all the windows and close curtains on the sunny side
of the house. This way you should be able to maintain a temperature several
degrees lower than outside. Opening a window in the middle of the afternoon
will only heat up the inside of the house. If you want to feel the
refreshing effect of air movement, get a fan.

The temperature in my house is currently 26 downstairs and 28 upstairs. I
have no windows open. A couple of hours ago, according to Martin Rowley,
the external temperature near here was 32 degrees and I suspect it's higher
now.

Yep, it works well for me to, even with the curtains open.

Yes this routine works well for me. With the living room on the north side
of the house I close windows and door about 9am and the temp in this room at
least remains about 4deg below outside. I then open everything up in late
evening.

If it's 30+ outside and 25 inside then what's going to happen!

Yes like you I was very sceptical and thought how ridiculous to keep windows
shut. However I had need to go out for much of yesterday so kept my west
facing windows shut with curtains drawn, when I got back home that part of
the house was cooler. I was pleasantly surprised and almost convinced!

I think today is going to be worse for me than yesterday. My max downstairs
was 27, some eight degrees lower than outside, but this morning I've had
all windows wide open and can't get below 24. Trouble is the external walls
are one-foot-thick solid concrete and act as storage radiators.

I've noticed this storage radiator effect since moving to a new house from one
that had loads of trees around it to provide shade.
Now my lawn chair sits outside the front door on concrete, with a brick wall
a couple of feet behind it and a brick porch support on its right. For
the first four months of this year, it was pleasant to sit there after
sundown (about 19:30 local time), but from then on, the stored heat from the
sun fairly pours out of these bricks and up from the concrete! It's like
sitting in a brick oven. Eight-thirty or later is the earliest I can go out
there now.
