August's full moon

There's this belief that August's full moon is the best in the year. I'm not
sure if it has to do with the fact that most Greeks take their holiday in
August and they're more likely to combine it with romantic and carefree
nights on the beach; however, it has been the case during the last years
that the major archeological sites are open for those who'd like to spend
the night or, simply, have an airy walk there.
Well, yesterday was *the* night. All of us who have remained in Athens
grabbed some beers and joined the tourists for a magnificent night in the
Acropolis: http://www.e-kairos.com/img/moon_acropolis.jpg. It is so rare to
see the central promenades of the old town so remarkably full of people at
this time of the year, when Athens is virtually empty -and so great to live
in.

Wonderful picture, Yanni, thank you! Parthenon, and other reminders of
glorious ancient time, still in scaffolding....Enjoy your empty Athens!

In Britain too the term august moon is a secular reference to the
culmination of the summer. The wine on the dregs sort of thing.

After the August moon, the weather tends to go downhill and of course
most of the ingathering is over. But where does the reference to a
particular phase of the August moon indicate that it is specifically
the full moon?

The earliest reference to the word moon as a month describes it as a
division of of the zodiac not a period equivalent to an astronomical
measurement of the moon.

The word august predates the criminal in whose honour the western world
has been saddled with the term for the 8th month.
