Yes, I can see your point now John. I should of ruminated on it more,
rather than a knee jerk reaction.

I hope you're only teasing with your "should of".

Felly sgrifennodd John Hall :
"Sat" is indeed the past participle, but it isn't used in the so-called
"past imperfect" tense. Thus you could say "I sat" (perfect tense) or "I
was sitting" (past imperfect tense), but not "I was sat". Perhaps
another example will make it clearer. You would say "I ate" or "I was
eating", but surely not "I was ate"!

According to my Oxford English Reference dictionary, the past participle of
eat is eaten. You may say "I was eaten", which is passive (it was done to
me). In the same way, if someone or thing made you sit, you would be sat.

I think.

Actually, I quite like the phrase "I was sat"; it has an archaic feel about
it. It certainly suggests to me that "it was just happening" rather than
"I was actively doing it", which is a useful literary device.

Isn't that tortology?

Isn't that the study of civil wrongs? Or perhaps viennoiserie?

I keep thinking I'm going to have to dig out the mower - but am putting
it off, though not for too much longer otherwise I won't be able to get
onto it.

Got the mower out yesterday only to find my partner had emptied my can
of unleaded into her car the day before! ("I didn't think you would need
it yet"!).

When she wasn't looking I syphoned out enough to cut all my lawns which
were in desperate need of a trim (Monmouthshire).

I wonder if I can get away with blaming it on a senior moment. No, I thought
not.

In another ng where I occasionally post this would have
evolved into long thread of successive "Isn't that ..."
play-on-words messages by now. Fun to read,
desperately OT, and probably not a good thing for
u.s.w.
