This will come as a relief to many living in coastal areas. Not in south Cornwall. Forecast pressure for late Saturday is around 1017mb, so the effect on the astronomical tide will be neutral. However there is currently a force 5-6 easterly, forecast to ease slightly & veer SE for Saturday. Based on experience, and looking at past actual Newlyn tides compared with the forecast astronomical tides, a force 6 SE tends to raise tides in Newlyn by around 0.3m above that predicted by the combinedng astronomical & pressure prediction. This is because the water piles up in the bay. Also, although there is no decent swell, the sea is very choppy along the south coast. Conditions are certainly nothing like those which have occured a number of times previously, notably Oct. 2003, but I think some flooding now looks likely on the south Cornwall coast. The road along the Abbey slip in Penzance was under water on the last couple of tides. Graham Penzance |
