Hurricanes and Global Warming - New Evidence (The Independent)

There is some new research about the effects of GW on sea temperatures
in sea areas where tropical cyclones form. It was published this month
and is reported in The Independent today. Quote:

"The American-based team, whose work is reported in the US journal
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, used 22 different
computer climate models to look at the warming of oceans during the
20th century, which in the hurricane breeding grounds of the tropics
range from 0.32C to 0.67C. Unlike previous investigations, the new
research has focused on small cyclone- forming regions rather than
entire ocean basins.

"The important conclusion is that the observed SST increases in these
hurricane breeding grounds cannot be explained by natural processes
alone," said one of the scientists involved, Dr Tom Wigley, from the
National Centre for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. "The
best explanation for these changes has to include a large human
influence."

The article and its headline are stupid and misleading, like
much in The Independent these days. All the research shows is that SST
increases in hurricane-forming areas have an anthropogenic component.
The research does *not* show in increase in hurricane frequency or
violence because it wasn't looking for it. The correlation between
hurricane activity and SST's is a separate matter entirely, not
addressed by this piece of research, but that's too sophisticated for a
journalist looking for a story.

And the post was (WAS) the respected Dave Ludlow.

Isn't he the one who tells us the latest posts are out about the last
month's cyclones?
What has he not been reading this year?

I agree - and it's why I was careful to add the newpaper's name to the
thread title. My comments and the extracts I quoted referred only to
changes in sea temperature; I quite deliberately omitted the newspaper
twaddle! ;)
