Gordon - I'm still very concerned.

Well I have been keeping an eye (no pun intended) on the satellite movie loops
all day and when ex-hurricane Gordon engaged the upper trough around midday
there was an explosion of convection and it is now formed a vicious circulation.
Further north along the cold front the warm moist air in the conveyor belt ahead
of the front is being shoved upwards (fingers of cloud on imagery) , no doubt
increasing rainfall activity. Sferics have increased too indicating strong
lightning activity. This vicious unstable low system may develop a westerly
"sting jet" after it comes across Biscay and it will come too close for comfort
to SW England later tomorrow, just to the west. I recall one ECMWF forecast
having it off Lands End about 3 or 4? days ago. In fact ECMWF seem to have done
very well with the track but may be slower than predicted earlier. All in all
Gordon remains a worry for us folk down here in the SW especially near the coast
and at altitude. I'm off now to tell my neighbour the news :-)

From a rather anxious Haytor ... at least we are protected from the west, but
less from the south.
Boat should be OK in the Exe - fingers crossed.

I can't remember an occasion in the last 17 years while I have been
forecasting that there has been an ex-hurricane postioned where it is now?
Can anyone point to a similar situation in the past 50 years?

Latest swell forecasts show around 30' swell for the tip of Cornwall by
the early hours of Friday
(http://www.fnmoc.navy.mil/products/W...wav_ht.036.gif) But a
mere 7-9' in your part of the world. -Still more than enough to stop

Perhaps that the historical database is still not long enough to be
fully representative.

My latest 15 minute animation loop continues to show a much more
pronounced eastward momentum than northward - the area of greatest
convection continues to build though. I would have guessed in a very
amateurish was that NW Spain could be in some danger.

Cheers

You are probably right, at least in the short-term.

I dont see evidence of a 'vicious circulation', yet.

Hi Nigel,

How you doing? Can't help with the stats but what I do know is that beast is
heading for Corunna judging by latest satellite images at
http://www.metoffice.com/satpics/latest_IR.html . The only model to capture that
evolution was ECMWF at T+72 range. It then subsequently took it over SW England.
I'm not sure, but I have a feeling that this system may well end up wallowing
around in the Bay of Biscay , only time will tell. It can't track across land
into France, surely not?
