So, if the terrorists, 'flu pandemic, global climate change or extended
credit don't get you ... get set for the 'Arctic Blast'! http://www.express.co.uk/news_detail.html?sku=696 (Makes you wonder how we survived this far don't it?) Incidentally, it's going to be interesting to see how the 'White Christmas' thing is going to be verified this year with the wholesale closure of most of the old Weather Centres. As they use the nonsensical 'one flake doth a White Christmas make' rule, there going to be room for a lot of argy-bargy when people turn up after Christmas to claim their winnings ;-) -- FAQ & Glossary for uk.sci.weather at:- http://homepage.ntlworld.com/booty.weather/uswfaqfr.htm and http://booty.org.uk/booty.weather/metindex.htm |

OMG -14C OMG :-)
I notice our very own Ian Currie is mentioned in the article alongside Piers Corbyn LOL. How anyone can predict a white Christmas with any degree of confidence this far out beggars belief. Ian would you like to defend/explain your detailed prediction (east side of country but obviously not the west)? Will. -- "Martin Rowley" m wrote in message ... As for the article, well the Daily Express, what a surprise! You could practically take the thing apart paragraph by paragraph. -14C in 'exposed' Highland locations? Big deal. Though if they are talking about frost they probably mean the 'sheltered glens' we keep hearing about on the TV forecasts. I would suspect -14C would be around the average lowest of the year reading for Altnaharra. If it happened in the centre of Glasgow then that would be another matter entirely. Frost and snow and brief cold spells in winter, whoever would have thought it? Oh and the last paragraph is wrong too. We are *not* the 4th richest country in the world. We have the 4th largest *economy*. Or at least we did have until very recently when we were overtaken by China. -- Col Bolton, Lancashire 160m asl |

It's called Winter. Why do the papers get so worked up about it? Oh, I remember - so they can sell more papers :-/ |

The reality is that ALL the articles in the Express, be it foreign news,
home news, politics are equally sensationalist and inaccurate - its not just that "story". Mind you if the MO had a spokesperson that was available for media then this could be somewhat avoided. brian aberfeldy wild today, but wilder on the mountains Martin Rowley wrote: So, if the terrorists, 'flu pandemic, global climate change or extended credit don't get you ... get set for the 'Arctic Blast'! http://www.express.co.uk/news_detail.html?sku=696 (Makes you wonder how we survived this far don't it?) It's called Winter. Why do the papers get so worked up about it? Oh, I remember - so they can sell more papers :-/ Amazing how perfectly normal winter conditions get hyped up into something exceptional. I am now awaiting the first person at work to come up to me and say that we are in for a 'severe' or 'bitter' winter. My eyes will roll heaven-ward and I will allow myself a little sigh. I will gently probe them as to where they heard this revalation. Of course they won't know where they heard it, let alone which particular organisation was responsible. It's just something they heard in the media somewhere so it *must* be true. The general public simply don't understand that these predictions usually don't come from the Met Office, yet they seem to treat them as if they are something 'official'. -- Col Bolton, Lancashire 160m asl |

From the William Hill site (Press Release archive) " White Christmas Betting Now By Royal Appointment! Bookmakers William Hill were inundated with calls from worried punters that their yearly bet on a white Christmas would not be possible, following the news that the London Weather Centre is now fully automated and that the hallowed ground where one flake of snow needs to fall would no longer be the centre piece of White Christmas betting. But after lengthy discussions today with the Met office Hills have been assured that advances in technology make it possible for them to provide a result anywhere in London not just on the met office roof. As a result Hills have moved the London snow result to Buckingham Palace and the surrounding area for which they are presently offering 8/1." .... perhaps they are going to get Prince Philip to look outside every now and then to see what gives! Mind you if the MO had a spokesperson that was available for media then this could be somewhat avoided. If (note if) the MetO is contacted there's always a "spokesperson" available 24/7. The press office personal will normally deal with them during normal working hours and at all other times the calls are handled by the public weather service forecasting bench. However, this fact alone won't stop what we've witnessed today, perhaps for some of the reasons already offered... Jon. |
