Default UKMO Severe weather warning for whole UK (?)

I notice on http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/..._warnings.html
tha the UKMO has weqather warnings "severe gales" for every region (??) for
Saturday Sunday AND Monday.

Is it a case of someone there just spilling the red ink over the maps or do
all 60 million of us really need to hold tightly onto our socks for the
next 3 days?

- Tom.

Even though it looks a bit of a heavy-handed approach, I imagine it
represents the uncertainty in the track of the system(s) and that fact
that we're having two pulses of strong winds expected - the FSXX T+48
and T+60 for 00Z and 12Z Sunday show the two pulses quite well.

I've stuck them on he

Looks very interesting ahead. Looking a bit ahead of myself to next
Thursday, the models are pointing to another system that could bring
further strong winds.

Make sure you have a decent pop-up blocker because the imageshack site
is a bit profligate.

Sorry about that - does anyone know any alternatives for future
reference?

For every region except Orkney & Shetland, it seems. Is this because:

(a) Someone forgot to paint us red
(b) We really aren't affected
(c) We won't notice the difference?

Where's Orkney?

Is that the far north :-)

You'll probably miss it actually. But I know that what folk call a gale in the
SE is really only a strong breeze up there. A real island gale blows cement
mixers around and blows over stone walls. At least that what a lighthouse man
from Muckle Flugga once told me!

It's surprising some of those lighthouses were ever completed, given
the prevailing weather in the locations.

If you come across a book called "The Lighthouse Stevensons" it's a
goodly read.

On a calm day I've been out to the Bishop Rock (to the SW of Scilly. -

Apart from the fact it's stuck out in the Atlantic on a small rock
which is frequently totally submerged, the builders lived on a remote
island, barely more than a rock to the SW of St Agnes. How they managed
I can't imagine.
