Wind speed and gust calculator
 

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As promised I have uploaded an Excel spreadsheet that will allow you to estimate
a wind speed and gust at any height up to 50 metres above ground level given a
wind speed and gust measurement at one height. All you have to do is enter the
heights and the measured data and the spreadsheet will do the rest.

I emphasise that any results you get are theoretical *estimates* and in any
postings/correspondence I suggest you quote the measured data and state clearly
that data for any other height is an estimate. Having said that I hope that this
spreadsheet will help in data comparison, e.g. wind at 10 metres. If lots use
it, it has the advantage of one method of correction. The sheet also calculates
and outputs roughness length which will vary according to wind direction. I
intend to use my data to see how roughness length varies with wind direction and
atmospheric conditions.

Finally if any one is lucky enough to have wind *measurements* at two or more
heights then I would be grateful for any comparisons with the outputs of the
spreadsheet.

I still have a problem here.

The wind vane and anemometer are mounted on a mast lashed to a chimney
which is on the centre line of the house. There's a difference in height
of about three metres between the front of the house and its rear. From
where do I measure the height of the anemometer?

Does it matter?

Alan I would suggest height above ground just below the mast. I suspect your
readings will vary as to whether the wind is going up or down the slope. I have
a similar problem but less extreme.

Nope. The best part is that my rather old and OS/2 based spreadsheet can
load and use the file.

One query what is supposed to be in cell A5? I have 39,058 but A5 doesn't
appear to be referenced anywhere else.

Ah right it actually said £39,058 when I first loaded the sheet.
Obviously the bits that tell the software how to format a value have
changed. Yep, tell it to format as a date and I get the 7th Dec 06.
