Did anybody hear what John Kettley said about TV weather
presenters on 5-Live this morning ... or read what he was alleged to have said in the Evening Standard today? I've been getting calls from the nationals, and I don't know whether to agree, disagree, or keep schtum !! Philip Eden |

I'll back up John Kettley's comments
I also bring into question any forecasts that said dry & mild in England and Wales this week Here in North Devon, i went to the post box early this morning, in strong gusty winds and a heavy burst of rain. It's been raining all day today. Plus it may continue to rain for another 24 hours or so yet Mild it may be, but wet. Much needed rain too !! |

I got the impression that he was specifically talking about the London/SE regional ... the transcript pointed to earlier in the thread is pretty accurate: he didn't elaborate though. Philip Eden http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/a...ening%20Standa rd Enjoy! Paul. I would agree with John's comments. However, much of the problem stems from the severe time constraints put on the forecasters/presenters. It really makes my blood boil when I am trying to listen to a forecast that is curtailed due to previous program over-run and the following advertisements, holy grail for the BBC at the moment. OT. Have you noticed how often an item in the national news just happens to concern the subject of a coming BBC program. Nothing short of a disgrace. I would sack the lot of them and start with a new bunch..and some strict rules, number one of which would be NO ADVERTS/TRAILERS. -- Bernard Burton Wokingham, Berkshire, UK. I am sick and tired of fill-ins - seeing those skateboarders or people in red doing their funny dancing. As for trailers, if there is one thing that puts me off watching a particular show is to have been subjected to the same advert for the previous ten days (or so it seems). It would be instructive to find out just how many minutes per day BBC1 (for example) spends on fill-ins, trailers. It could certainly release a significant amount of time for more important matters. By the way, had you all realised that Charlie Cornwall-Windsor is getting married in a couple of months time? The BBC doesn't seem to have given it much air time, so I thought I would mention it in case some of you had missed it:-) Jack |

There will be a BBC News Special on Charles and Camilla on Thursday at 1900 GMT on BBC One so no need to miss out (: Best wishes to them both. -- Gianna Stefani www.buchan-meteo.org.uk |

The handbook says that in UK, even though the natives spend much of their time moaning about the weather and Royals, foreigners are not allowed to criticize them (and I assume this applies to anyone whose name is not obviously Anglosaxon). These are like family members - one can complain about the behaviour of one's own children or parents (or weather or Royals), but any hint of censure from an outsider is unacceptable, and very bad manners. BTW Reading this group has indeed added my knowledge about English and the English. I looked up "curmudgeon" in my dictionary. Thank you for that. |

Sorry, but you missed my :-) Ah. *blush* yes you did, and well done for doing so (-: Many Brits have an irreverent indifference to our Royals, but I'm sure you had already noticed. Yes indeed. Italy used to have Royals but is cured of them now. In recent years they were allowed to return (as 'ordinary' citizens) and a documentary was on tv about them (RAI). I thought them to be unpleasant. The UK Royals seem a little more 'human' and much less offensive. I do have the strong belief that people should be allowed to be happy if they can. I found it very sad how vindictive some people have been today (I read some of the posts on the bbc news site about C and C). No offence intended to anyone of any nationality or persuasion (royalist / republican). Just my own thoughts. -- Gianna Stefani www.buchan-meteo.org.uk |
