Default Snow 8th Feb - brief post-mortem

OK first of all I'd like to congratulate the Met Office on a great forecast. The
heaviest and most persistent snow was always going to be the Midlands northwards
(i.e. north of M4) and that was well reflected in the 90% risk of disruption
area.

For a change we missed out in Haytor, apart from a very light 1cm covering
yesterday. Although we had sleet and moderate very wet snow lashing against the
window in a strong F6 east wind into the early hours, it never settled at my
altitude with the temperature hovering +1 to +2C and positive dewpoint. Higher
up, above 500m asl, there was circa 2-3 inches lying snow until around noon
(webcam and Radio Devon evidence). Still patches at that altitude. Exmoor had 4"
in places. Total precip for event 15 mm. Just one degree lower for temperature
and it would have been so different. Today has been showery with hail storms and
temperature falling 3-4 degrees in showers. Drifts of hail in Bovey Tracey and
on road to Widecombe.

This was my local Devon forecast issued last week:

" ... Wednesday looks like being a thoroughly wet and cold day with spells of
heavy rain. Possibly sleet or wet snow over the high parts of Dartmoor above
500m asl. Winds possibly strong to gale SE'ly swinging into the SW later in the
day and then easing off. Temperatures starting at 1-4C depending on altitude but
rising later in the day to 4-7C.
The rest of the week looks like remaining unsettled with bands of heavy rain and
showers passing through with fresh to strong winds mainly in the southwest
quadrant. Thunder and hail are likely and possibly some more sleet or wet snow
at times on high Dartmoor. Some sunny intervals, and frost unlikely. Maximum
temperatures in the range 5-8C. "

Apart from timing, not bad, half a shandy for me tonight :-)

I'm really pleased a lot of people had a decent fall, even if it was
short-lived. Such a pleasure to read of people enjoying the snow and taking
pictures. Bit sobering though to hear comments like 4 cm is the "best snow for
10 years" , perhaps things will change and we will get more back to normal,
though I worry we might not!

Anyway, enough of this, enjoy what's left, I got a mere 1cm yesterday, but I
know it's guaranteed to snow again up here, but not this time.

Snowy cheers,

Will.
