Cold? What cold?
I think Alex Deakin is getting a bit ahead of himself. "Well there's
no doubt about it, Winter is definitely back..." he just said. Then... "and another cold day tomorrow." OK, thinks I, I'd better check the thermometer... I must have missed something. Hmmm... 8.5 deg C. Now what was it at lunchtime, 11 or 12 if I remember rightly. Winter's back? Really??? Oh, perhaps he means there's a severe wind chill... they do tend to rattle on about that. So I'll go outside in bare feet and shirtsleeves, that'll teach me, won't it? Well I did, I spent 5 minutes or so pottering about in the garden and patio dressed as for summer. Quite a pleasant day really, bit breezy but nothing much and lovely and bright, too. Ideal for a bit or gardening really. I was tempted to do my first grass cut of the year! Well here I am again, back inside. No, not due to frostbitten bare feet or to grab my gloves and coat - but because I was bored and want to watch the footy results. Made me chuckle. Maximum temperature of just shy of 14°C here - more appropriate in April or May - a good 6 or 7degC above what you'd expect I guess. Looking at http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/.../uk/guide.html indicates that that would've been "exceptionally mild". I just lurk in the vain hope I'll pick something up. One of my neighbours has just cut his lawn for the first time this year. The reason I'm posting it is that he wins the best kept garden award with monotonous regularity, so he knows his stuff. This is in Dunfermline, Fife. Must be mild in my opinion. |

I went out for a walk this afternoon to the top of Hay Tor and round just to experience the wind. Storm force 10 almost on the summit and great trouble standing up and walking. Temperature when I left home was 6.8 deg C (circa 1615) so on the summit probably around 5.5 deg C. Was I cold - no - weatherbeaten and hardly able to stand - yes, but cold - no way. If he'd said "cold in the North", "windy everywhere and cold in the North" or "colder weather spreading Southwards to reach the South Coast this evening" all would have been well. But he didn't qualify his statements in any way... and it's that sort of sweeping generalisation that gets 'em a bad name, often unecessarily. Some people get carried away
Ok fine, some people are getting wintry showers today I'm only seeing rain showers, and i live in the Uk as well This has been a totally snow-less winter for some of us Look, we've got ONE day of average temperatures The weather chart i saw last night had +7C across the south today It's a 48 hour cold snap for the north 24 hours for the south The majority of the time, we are experiencing above average temperatures. The stats at the end of this season will speak for themselves Yes, there is a strong wind blowing outside, i'm sure that adds to the wind-chill. It will feel colder than it really is But temps of +6, +7 - no-one can hardly call this a severe wintry spell of weather Lower levels may see a few lucky flakes in the wind, but it ain't going to stick, except for over the hills So i hope to enjoy ONE day of average temperatures, so it may at last feel like February for a change |

The forecasters keep saying northerly winds what northerly winds? it has happened every single cold snap this winter i open my curtains this morning, to see the direction the clouds are travelling, and it's west-north-west (off the warm atlantic) it is NOT north winds maybe they will more to the north later in the day, when any chance for showers has gone Very brief little scatty light spots of rain showers I can hardly contain my excitement !! |

I tell you it is perishing on Dartmoor ATM. Go walking above 400m and that NW-N wind is severe gale at least with temperatures below 3 deg C. Some of the most dangerous conditions I have seen this winter. OK on low ground it is different as you say, but for upland Devon winter has come back with a vengeance.
