The frogs in our garden pond started their springtime croaking
yesterday. I don't keep a record of these things but that seems very early. I think it's usually March before they get up to such activities but I could be wrong. Norman. (delete "thisbit" twice to e-mail) -- Norman Lynagh Weather Consultancy Chalfont St Giles 85m a.s.l. England |

From this site: http://www.naturescalendar.org.uk/findings/averages/ for the recent few years, first-siting of frog spawn we 1998 28 February 1999: 28 February 2000: 5 March 2001: 12 March 2002: 4 March 2003: 6 March 2004: 15 March 2005: 7 March 2006: 15 March .... this year (2007), it's 5th February. From my own records (integrated with those of nearby Easthampstead Park), this 'standard' winter (DJF) will be one of the 3 or 4 warmest such periods in the last 35 years. In Penzance it is almost certain to be my warmest winter on record (since 1991) Current mean 8.9C, warmest prior to this 1994 - 8.7C Graham Penzance |

I spotted half a dozen frogs (and caught one) in a pond in a quarry on the Hill of Clashmadin near Cullen this afternoon. It does seem very early for them to be active, especially being so much further north than Norman is. Anne |

Hardly dozens but one or two in a number of places. All pretending I hadn't seen them. |
