We have had bi-weekly collections here for about 4 years. No rats or
flies (unless you forget to put your rubbish out which quite a few
student houses seem to end up doing).

As with convoys in WW II, the whole shebang has to go at the speed of
the least gifted.

And allowing everyone to suffer because of some ignorant, dirty and
lazy fools is not exactly the way to handle refuse collection.

Once again the government proves itself incapable of handling the most
mundane of administrative problems. The need for saving money and
screwing everyone who gets in the way of that is paramount, it seems.

I wonder if the people who committed the study are the same ones with
the sheep's brains that were supposed to be studying Mad Cows. One has
to cachinnate, doesn't one.

Whats the problem.

We have two bins one for "green" stuff and the rest for plastics and other
rubbish etc. We also have separate containers for glass, cans and paper,
cardboard goes in green re-cyclable bin. Both are collected every alternate two
weeks. We have no problems with smells, rats, flies or anything else. Perhaps
it's different in the crowded streets of London? The issue Lawrence is the
re-cycling targets imposed by Government - not GW.

speaking from the crowded streets of London, not a million miles from
Lawrence, as it happens (if this is the same Lawrence of sunny
Sydenham?), Lewisham is so inconsistent on recycling that it would be
quite difficult even for this two-person household to get by on a
fortnightly collection. There is a green box/wheely bin for paper,
glass and some plastics, but everything else has to go into the black
bin, including garden waste (we don't have room for a compost heap).
This is inconsistent because Lewisham also run a fantastically good
recycling centre at New Cross, where you can take anything - in your
car... If they actually collected all the stuff they can recycle at the
centre, we'd be laughing. But they don't.

how on earth do they lift the wheelie bin lids ;0)

we have three wheelie bins green blue and grey , the only threat to the
environment is the brain strain on a Tuesday trying to remember which one to
put out

It's time for a bit of consistency - no two councils seem to be taking the
same approach.
We have two bins (alternate weely collections) : the green bin is for paper,
plastic and cans, the black bin is for "non-recyclables". Glass has to be taken
to a collection point one mile away in one direction (the bins there are always
full) and garden refuse has to be taken to an amenity tip the same distance
away but in the opposite direction.
People less than a mile away (different council) can put garden refuse in the
black bin but cannot put cans in the green bin.

Our bins are collected fortnightly already.

Non-recyclable waste is placed in a black wheelie bin, collected once a
fortnight, and seldom more than half full, usually less.

On the alternate week, recyclable waste is collected - we have a black plastic
box for cans and glass, a small sealable bag for batteries, and a white sack for
paper. Again, box and sack are seldom more than half full. The battery bag
has yet to be used as most of our battery usage is of the rechargeable type.

Quite a few houses (mainly student ones around here) put extra bags out
or pile so much in the bin that the lid can't be closed. The council
helpfully stick stickers on saying they can't collect bags left beside bins.

The bags then get left out on the street for a fortnight until the next
collection.

The council have started prosecuting people for leaving their rubbish
out on the wrong day or for leaving too much or the wrong stuff, etc.
