That is a very amateur response. I am an amateur! I think frivolous was the word you were searching for. A professional would not just "stick an anemometer on top of a 10m pole". A bit sensitive some of you professionals. I know of some (professionals) who've stuck it on a much shorter pole than that! See www.easterling.freeserve.co.uk/weather.html for my pole. You have a lot to learn, my friend. No need to be condescending - don't we all! Really rough on the north coast today. Good picture of the foam in the car park at Perranporth on Spotlight. Swell at Sevenstones reached 20' - unusual on a NNW (short fetch - Ireland in the way) most 20'+ swells are on a S, SW or W. Graham Penzance www.pznow.co.uk/weather/weather.html |

Professional = engaged in an activity as a paid job rather than as an amateur. Amateur = engaged in an activity without being paid. It may not be assumed that the former is of necessity better than the latter (or vice versa). Prostitutes are an example of 'professional' ... are they 'better' than those who perform a similar function for love? -- Gianna http://www.buchan-meteo.org.uk * * * * * * * |

In message .com,

Graham Penzance There's been a big NW-WNW swell pushing round the SW corner of Ireland today so that's no doubt had an effect on the heights at Sevenstones. The significant wave height just off the SW of Ireland has been over 30 feet last night and today. Norman. It seems that many observers have fallen in love with their gadget without knowing how to use it or being able to evaluate the significance of what it shows. A further gadget, of course, enables them to publish their findings wordwide. I have never tried to measure wind speed, not having a 10-m pole in the middle of a field. A Beaufort estimate is quite enough, anything more being too much information, nearly all of it useless. It all rather reminds me of kids' mobile phone calls, i.e. bereft of real content but it's a nice toy. I think I'm going to cry... -- Alan White Mozilla Firefox and Forte Agent. Why? You've effectively rubbished all the [WR]s that I've posted since 1998. It's almost too much to bear but I suppose I must get a grip. Webcam and weather:-http://windycroft.gt-britain.co.uk/weather If your exposure is good (I've no idea BTW) you can dry your eyes and tuck in to the Shredded Wheat with renewed self-esteem. The reason I don't bother with serious wind measurements is that the best exposure I could find would not justifiy measurement using any device whatever. I look at trees, low cloud, go for a short walk etc and make an estimate. This can be difficult at night or if there is no low cloud or worse, raining. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. |
