[WR] Solent - phew what a scorcher!
 

It's currently a gloriously sunny day here in Solentland with a light
Easterly and the temperature is at its highest for the day, 22.8 deg
C.

Last night's minimum was 11.3 degrees.

Just down the road Solent MRSC reported 23.6 deg C at 1400 BST (though
the Met Office site says it was 1400 UTC, which I doubt) so 24 degrees
C is on the cards there, Hurn too where it was 23..8 at 1400 BST.

Phew, what a scorcher!

I'm off out into the sun now... :)

Something looks odd to me with these hourly temperatures at Solent
MRSC via the Met Office site.

1100 BST 17.0 C Wind NNE 2 mph.
1200 BST 17.7 C Wind CALM.
1300 BST 23.6 C Wind NNE 8 mph.

That hourly rise of almost 6 C takes some explaining. A possible cause
could have been a temporary drift from the sea around about midday
when the sea breeze tried to develop, but was thwarted by a sudden
burst of air from inland.

Yes it does look odd but I'd go with your own suggestion. The
temperatures at Solent at 1300 and especially 1400 are consistent with
my own readings, 5 miles inland (max 23.3 deg C). The sea breeze had a
struggle to get going and didn't ever seem to reach my location. Also,
Solent was already at 17.0 degrees by 1000 and was pegged back below
18 degrees for two hours before making that jump. It could have been a
combination of sea breeze frontal cloud and variable wind direction
but as I wasn't down on th beach today, I can't be sure. I went to the
park instead, LOL.

St Catherines Point was on about 16 degrees C all day so I have no
problem with the Solent readings apart from my usual comment about the
site itself.

Further to my earlier post it's just struck me that the anemometer and
wind vane are on top of a 30 metre tower overlooking the beach at
Lee-on-the Solent and it wouldn't surprise me if at 1100 and 1200 BST
there was a sea breeze lower down, close to the beach. Clearly this
didn't show up at 30 metres but it may have been there (temporarily)
at 2 metres in such light winds, before getting pushed back out to sea
for a few hours, by a strengthening NE (and warm) wind.
