Davis Vantage Pro and Weatherlink - rollover time
 

One of the main disadvantages for me with this system has been the
time of day the new daily record starts. It is set in stone at 12
midnight. For most people I gather on here and elsewhere this doesnt
cause a problem, but for myself and other Met Stations we use the
0900hr rollover time (10am in the summer).

I have my new VP2 since December and I am happy to report its working
fine, the data is very similar to the Met equipment with the added
bonus of being able to see it live on my screen without walking up the
garden. Since then I have been asking around and nobody is able to
offer anything to change the rollover time from midnight to 0900hrs,
as a result daily data can often be very different, especially
rainfall.

After emailing Davis in the USA and getting no response I finally sent
them a letter asking if they could find a solution, Yesterday I
received a reply, the answer is "

At this time there is no way to change the time of day that the
station starts a new daily record. This is unlikely to change in the
near future. I will pass along your suggestion though.

that all the logged data would be incorrectly timed.

It certainly is one of the disappointing features of the VP.

I upload the data to an Excel spreadsheet then make the time adjustments.

I know it's not a cure but it gets me around this problem of 0-24hr
recording as opposed to 09-09hr.

In case it's of any interest, I have a software utility (in perpteual
beta at present as new features are requested) that will read WL
archive files and produce monthly summary tables:

1. In a fully flexible format;

2. Starting the station day at any hour;

3. Providing at least a rough estimate of bright sunshine hours
(assuming you have a solar sensor fitted);

That is what I would try, set the VP clock 9 hours slow (when clock time
is in GMT). If this is actually useful would depend on the log/data file
structure. It could be quite simple to write something to add 9 hrs to the
logged time or it could be a nightmare. As nothing appears to have been
written I suspect reality is the latter.

How is the data stored one massive database file or seperate file(s) per
day?

Dave - I,m not sure exactly how its stored ?? - I can pull monthly
reports, but the main database appears to be one big thing, but I
could be wrong. THe VP clock has to be PC time, as far as I know
aswell

I dont know if this is of any use but Weather-Display software is capable
of running all its reports and calculations etc at either midnight or
09:00 rollover for the days values. Most people using this s/w in
Autralia and NZ use the 09:00 reset time.

I must admit I leave mine at midnight as I have never understood why met
readings should not follow the actual day! But that discussion is for
another thread :-)

It may as well be discussed here.
Could it be that the Met. Office thought it unwise to require its employees to
take the readings from their screen equipment at midnight?
As they would be at work at 0900, perhaps it seemed logical to take the readings
'first thing'.

Personally, I am quite pleased by this at it means I can go out and look at my
kit at 0900, rather than staying up until after midnight - 0100 in the summer!

I use Weather Display and it's 0900 setting too - quite useful.....
