![]() "Philip Eden" philipATweatherHYPHENukDOTcom wrote About 200m from the Stockingstone roundabout. May I ask who's asking? Philip I live close to Asda in Wigmore right on the Herts Border with Cockenhoe just a short walk away. I guess the Luton gauge is a good indicator of rainfall where I live. I can't remember such a long period of continuous rain for a few years. |

There is a Severe Weather Warning out for SE England (except Sussex) for heavy rain. Also, on R4 1257 pm some gushing girlie mentioned a couple of inches of rain (I think) for SE England this afternoon and evening. So far I've had 5.2 mm today, none of it heavy, and it has not been raining for the last two hours. Looking at the radar I can't quite see where this professed deluge is coming from. Can anybody else? Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, NE Surrey, 556 ft. Better answer my own question, I suppose. The rain fell overnight, and this morning I measured a total for the day of 31.3 mm. Even so, it hardly merited a Severe Weather Warning, and the timing of this was completely wrong. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, NE Surrey, 556 ft. |

At 0900z on the 28th the event total at Whipsnade is up to 64.8mm. It has been raining continuously for 27.5h, and it has rained for 33.1h of the last 37 according to the Dynes TSR. The Luton figure will be appreciably higher, but I won't pick that up until this evening. Final event rainfall (20z on Sat to 20z on Mon) was 70mm at Whipsnade (today's rain estimated from TSR record) and 99mm at Luton (recorded in a standard rain-gauge with a standard measuring cylinder). The extensive flooding in low-lying parts of Luton which triggered the cancellation of the Carnival was testament to the exceptional fall in the town. Philip |
