This, if it is maintained, will make it the lowest May max in my record, starting 1983, and all the more rmarkable for being so late in the month. Oddly enough, until 1996 my lowest May max of 7.8°C had also been on the 28th, in 1983. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, NE Surrey, 556 ft. |

Philip any reports of sleet given its been so cold ? i hear the Luton carnival has been postponed I was outside doing the midday ob when the temperature was at its lowest point, 4.6°C, and it was only rain. I guess sleet is just about possible, but I'm often of the opinion that reports of sleet in this sort of set-up are more wishful-thinking than anything else. Assuming a saturated adiabatic lapse rate, the freezing level is almost 900m above the ground here (is that right or am I having a cerebral brown-out?) It may be a little steeper than that, but not much. Whatever, it's still blinking cold. Philip |

Oddly enough, until 1996 my lowest May max of 7.8°C had also been on the 28th, in 1983. Perhaps irrationally, I find it rather reassuring that in spite of global warming we can still get as cold a late May day as this. I suppose that the North Sea and the sea to the north of the UK must be warmer than normal, given the recent warm weather, and I wonder what the temperature might have been otherwise - maybe a degree or so lower still? -- John Hall "I am not young enough to know everything."
