Which at any more than an hour or two's notice (and that may be
optimistic) is unlikely to be possible with thundery downpours.

Yes, is it tricky, this is where I agree with Norman's view on
Nowcasts.

Since 2004 there has been a dedicated Nowcasting bench in the Operations
Centre that orchestrates the issue of Flash warnings in conjunction with the
Chief and Public Weather Service forecasters.

Well, our bit [1] of Cheshire's had an inundation today. We got home at
about 17:00 this evening to find our lane flooded and water pouring through
our garden, by far the worst it's been in the 19 years we've lived in the
village.

I haven't got a real rain gauge, but measured about an inch in the downpour
a couple of days ago. Today's very brief thunderstorm must have brought
many times that to result in such a spectacular wipe-out. We certainly
don't need any more until the ground's had a chance to drain.

And Glastonbury :-)

Stopped raining this evening here in Haytor, actually got a bit of sun too!
Plenty of water on the moor and I had it all to myself this afternoon,
brilliant - no tourists!

and The Great Dorset Mudbath[1] is not until the end of August - what
will happen in between?

[1] aka The Great Dorset Steam Fair (once in a while it's the Great
Dorset Dustbowl).

It's pretty obvious once you round you the minutes.

OK, a lamer would mistake the phase of June the 30th for that of the
22nd but hell, that's what I'm here for.

OK, OK, there are one or two awkward ones; the 22nd of July for
instance and the 5th and 28th of August but hell, that's why we have
god.

I thought there was a Nowcasting bench long before 2004.

Not specifically. You're probably thinking of the quality control of FRONTIERS?

Could be. I just have a vague memory of seeing a sign on one of the benches
in CFO/NMC at Bracknell with "nowcasting" on it.

May have done, can't remember for sure now, but yes there has always been a
nowcasting type of position. Going back to the early 90s the closest to the
current Nowcasting role was the SPFU - "Short Period Forecast Unit"
forecaster which later became the PAF - "Principal Aviation Forecaster".
This role was then effectively split between the current Nowcasting position
and the SAF - "Senior Aviation Forecaster" and to a lesser extent the
current Airfields Team Leader.
