Dear all,
some of the temperature maxima for the last couple of days in Greece: Elefsina/AP: +45.8C (a new June record for the whole country. Previous was +45.7C in the city of Irakleio, Crete, on 29/6/1916) Kalamata/AP: +45.0C (previous record was +41.8C on 25/6/1982) Palaeochora: +44.3C Larisa/AP: +43.4C (previous record was +42.2C on 25/6/1982) Tatoi/Athens: +43.4C (previous record was +42.0C on 25/6/1982) Acharnae/Athens: +43.3C Tanagra/AP: +43.2C (previous record was +42.4C on 26/6/1982) Chania/TUC: +43.1C Lamia: +42.6C (previous record was +42.3C on 25/6/1982) Kythera/AP: +41.6C Trikala: +42.4C (previous record was +40.2C on 25/6/1982) Thermi/Thessaloniki: +41.9C Athens/AP: +40.5C Tripolis/AP: +40.4C Irakleio/AP: +39.4C Kastelli: +39.4C Serres: +39.4C Kastoria/AP: +39.0C Kozani: +38.2C Thessaloniki/AP: +38.0C Alexandroupolis/AP: +37.8C Skyros/AP: +36.2C Corfu/AP: +34.8C Argostoli: +34.5C Florina: +32.2C Temperatures were very variable in Crete and there were reports of very frequent switches between hot air from inland and a cool sea breeze. People travelling along the coast yesterday reported totally different conditions within a few hundred metres (ie from 42C down to 30C and then up to 40C again in a few seconds). This can be viewed at the station of Palaeochora, where temperatures were really independent of time of day. Today's expected to be slightly cooler in Athens -but still hot. Tomorrow's forecast to be the hottest day in downtown Athens and other parts of continental Greece. Could be a day of new records in areas that didn't get the chance to reset their own ones yesterday. Yannis, Bilthoven/NL |

Yannis, Bilthoven/NL There is a good sea breeze at Iraklio today and I notice the dew points are high (22°C). Most places in Greece seem a little cooler than yesterday. You're better off in The Netherlands, Yannis, though maybe not just at the moment. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. |

It doesn't really make me happy to be missing all this, especially because tomorrow could be a new record day (like today was, when Larisa's brand new Saturday record broke again at 44C). Today was, indeed, forecast to be a bit cooler in most areas. Athens hasn't made it over 38C. Tomorrow, however... It's the first time I remember a high resolution model forecast 44C in Athens -keep in mind the model sees the Athens basin as grass, not a city... Some summer records could well be in danger. Greetings from a grey Holland with a very painful in the ears c-g thunder every couple of days. Yannis |
