3rd Flash Flood nr Alston
 

The third flash flood on the North Pennines has just occured, well still
is but levels are falling rapidly.

Ash Gill draining the southern flank of Flinty Fell and the northern side
of Yadd Moss is well up. Not quite fully out of it's channel, but it was
at the lower places.

Garrigilll Burn and the other smaller gills that drain the other side of
Flinty Fell are only marginally, if at all, up considering how much
overall rain we have had recently. These are the ones that caused the road
damage and flooding at Garrigill last Thursday evening.

This rain came from a thunderstorm that occured around 1400, I recorded
just 3mm with a peak rate fo 2mm/hr. I'm about 4 miles from the catchment
of Ash Gill, which isn't that large maybe 20 sq km. Just shows how
localised these down pours are. Photos on my site latter...

Impressive pics!
We had a thunderstorm at 1220Z, it possibly was the same one as it was
moving west towards you. There were 3.2mm in 10min and it then
stopped, thankfully. Looks as if the extra uplift to your height
caused the problem.
There seem to have been a few very localised downpours recently. Drove
through a nasty, sudden flash flood on the A1 near Scotch Corner last
Thursday evening after 200 miles of clear sky from London. I wonder if
the EA's gauges are picking them up?

Our wind direction was NE'ly... but the wind (still only F3) dropped to
naff all during the actual rain fall. I wasn't here, again, taking No.1

What time? I was doing the same trip but only from Leeds. Must have been
at Scotch Corner about 2230/2300, I could see a large black mass in front
and the Road Information signs came on just south of Scotch Corner warning
of standing water/flood/heavy rain or similar. I just saw some large
puddles and a bit of wet road...

The A66 and all the way up Teesdale wasn't particularly remarkable, wet
bit normal puddles and minor run off, though the Tee's was pretty full. It
wasn't until Ash Gill bridge that it became apparent that there had been
*a lot* of rain, ballast size stones on the road lots of run off etc.
Thursday evening was the time of the flash flood in Garrigill and Alston.

I wonder if the EA's gauges are picking them up?

I wonder as well, they really are very localised. My 1000 Thursday to 100O
Friday total was 72mm. A Met Office gauge in Alston 2.5 miles away only
recorded something over 30mm... The Ash Gill catchment (4 miles away) had
a darn site more rain yesterday than the 3mm I recorded...

I've looked at the raw data file there are some hefty rates in there
(400mm/hr) which could be down to spurious counts due to lightening but
there are only half a dozen, if that, of those.

Around 1930 BST in the area of the slip road off to Piercebridge. Back
in Copley it had barely rained.
