Decoded SYNOP reports

I am in currently writing scripts to decode SYNOP reports
every 3 hours, day or night.

Output can be seen at
http://www.met.rdg.ac.uk/~brugge/00.html
(replace 00 with 03, 06, 09, 12, 15, 18 or 21 as required).

The scripts are a little temperamental, so if there are
problems please be patient. However, comments are welcome.

The files are valid for the last 24 hours, as the archive
is a rolling one.

Hi Roger,

The rainfall totals at the 06hr synop you could use the 24 hour totals
from the 7**** group as most of the UK use these now.

You also have some problem with the grass minimums, a lot of minus
numbers, as far as I can see only Shawbury was -2°c. Aviemore was +7°c
nor -0.1.

I guess you could also put in a humidity figure derived from the wet/dry
bulb temperatures.

Shame we don't get the whole list for all hours, I would love to see
Cairngorm and Aonach More etc on a daily basis :-(

Regards

Roger-At Last!
Colin Tandy and I produced a SYNOP program in the 1990's. It is very
good, although data acquisition made it a bit cumbersome. Even so we
were proud of it. You can have the software (with Colin's permission)
if you want it.

The station plots are as good as we could get them. And I thought them
up to Office quality. Colin used a Mercator projection (as it was
global) but I preferred the polar stereo at 60N.

Good luck - have you got a good source of synops? Sure you have but
contact me if you need any URLs-I think I have still got them.

We also decoded upper information with good success.

Look forward to your results.

Cheers

Paul

That's excellent. Is there any chance of an enhancement to add the site
name?

Roger,
I thought that by decoding you referred to turning synops into a station
plot. Raw synops are fairly easily available, mainly from the US.
Then you draw the map, wherever you wish on the globe, varying the
lat/long - print plotted synops - bingo.
You get the standard WMO data in plotted form, but of course not the
CLIMAT data. Excellent for 3 hourly use and analysis.
Wouldn't we all to love to get our hands on station plots hourly.!
So we have to make do with DWD, or similar, plotted data, every 3 hours.
I find it pretty good for UK, although I think it is designed for A3 as
the plots badly overlap in places - especially Europe.

Keith and Paul,

Thanks for the comments - I've been a bit busy
and away from my desk recently. Also, as you may
have seen I'm trying to sort out why the
decoding sometimes falls over.

Yes, plotting the obs would be the next logical step.
I'm thinking about how I could get as many obs plotted as possible
- possibly by having a large map and scrolling over it
as per the BBC TV forecasts?
