Default "Big chill will last a week" (Daily Express)

Daily Express (13th Dec 2007)

"Britain's big freeze is set to continue into next week..."

"And forecasters say the bitterly cold conditions will continue at
least into the early part of next week, with more heavy overnight
frosts expected..."

I find it very sad that this weather is described as above.

One day, we'll get a bloody nose in this Country!!!

Ps: I don't buy the paper, but a colleague at work always leaves
'exibit A' on my desk :-)

The media reflect the general lack of education about the weather in the UK.
The BBC is wholly responsible for this. Dumbing down forecasts to a level
where any departure from average temperature is made to appear sensational
in order to grab the viewer and stop him changing channels. Style before
content. I don't blame the Daily Express, they are not a public service.

I do. I don't believe that mass media has the right to misinform, fabricate
and insult just because it is privately owned. BBC weather forecasts may not
be well presented but if I had to stake my life on a forecast I wouldn't be
getting it from the forecast in a tabloid!

I don't know whether the BBC should take all the blame. What about the Met
Office for supplying them with dumbed-down presenters? Tori Lacey has been
banging on about the "bitter, bitter" weather all this week on Radio Five.

It's been going for a while now, as Helen Young once said on a January day
that the weather would "remain cold" when the temperature had been 10C with
light winds, and on another occasion that there would be "dense fog with
visibilities down to 300M"!

It just beggars belief how a a journalist can write such witless old
tosh.

Surely they must have a cuts department at the Express where the
journalist could make a comparison with previous cold spells - for
heaven's sake we haven't even had any snow yet!

Last 5 days maximums here 11.8, 11.3, 11.2, 11.7, 10.1
(The 1971-2000 mean max for Penzance being 10.5C so slightly above
normal overall)

With all the bitter weather forecast I notice the roads are all
freshly gritted, particularly important with a minimum temperature of
8.0C last night.

Bitter, oh you cannot be serious!
It is nothing like bitter FHS :-(

It's been going for a while now, as Helen Young once said on a January day
that the weather would "remain cold" when the temperature had been 10C with
light winds, and on another occasion that there would be "dense fog with
visibilities down to 300M"!

300m dense?
Dense is what we get up here regularly every time we get a wet southwesterly
i.e. less than 50 metres vis.

IMHO your colleague could more appropriately leave it in the khazi.

Agreed it's hardly cold, in fact today is warm, it's above 5C with blazing
sunshine and naff all wind. Spent most of the morning outside changing the
car battery(*) (spent most time messing about jury rigging a seperate 12v
supply to keep the radio and ECU's etc happy). Didn't get cold fingers
once.

Aye, 300m is a light mist. Dense is when you have to turn dipped beam
headlights off and switch on the front fogs as you get so much flare back
otherwise.

(*) The car battery thinks it has been cold, didn't have enough umph to
start the car the other morning as it has been below -2C most of the
night. Failed about two weeks ago as well for the same reason.
