Greek weather update

And another post regarding the weather, as promised.

517 mm of precipitation have fallen at the relatively low lying area
of Steni, at the island of Evia in 6 days. That was mostly sleet and
rain, though vast amounts of snow were falling when precipitation was
heavier. Thea area just outside the village is unreachable due to the
few meters of fresh snow that have fallen there. As this storm is
already away, minimum temperatures have dropped close to -10C in parts
of the highlands as well as low lying areas in the interior of the
mainland. Quite high diurnal temperature ranges are recorded too, with
maximum temperatures today reaching even 13-15C in various places.

Nope, this won't last long though. As it was pointed out earlier this
week, a really cold air mass is about to arrive to the Balkans from
the north and temperatures should drop considerably with -20C being
reached, I expect, in some mainland areas especially in the north.
Precipitation should begin on Saturday in the form of snowfalls over
the northern Aegean isles, eastern Macedonia and Thrace, which should
be very heavy locally on Sunday in the "eastern and southern wind
prone areas" of the country (namely eastern continental Greece, ie the
west Aegean coast, the Cyclades, yet again the island of Evia, which
is the first barrier to the cold and humid air as it arrives from the
N/NE, Attica, including much of Athens, the northeast of the
Peloponnese and vast parts of Crete, especially in the north).

With 1000/500hPa thicknesses dropping below 510 dam in Athens and T850
in the minus teens, snow should dominate the precipitation profile
even down to my favourite Athenian and Aegean beaches. I'd be tempted
to get a plane only to finally experience a blizzard again but that
would be too risky. At the same time, weather in northern Greece
(apart from the northeast) and throughout the west should be fair -but
icy.

Greetings to all,
Yannis.
