Unusually light and orangey across sky and houses so later after sunset. 1745 East Yorkshire. I got these in Wallsend after noticing the unusual sky colour and lightness. The camera had some difficulty in picking up the strange colours but a quick tweek in Irfanview did the business. Enhanced have _contrast in the filename http://llandru.servehttp.com/strange_light/P2180885.jpg well after sunset showing strange hazy clouds and strange reddish halo / rainbow http://llandru.servehttp.com/strange...5_contrast.jpg tweeking the contrast shows nebulous high level cloud http://llandru.servehttp.com/strange_light/P2180886.jpg The bizarre skies and weird clouds are evident in this south facing pic. The cranes are what's left of the Swan Hunter shipyard. http://llandru.servehttp.com/strange...6_contrast.jpg tweeking the contrast shows altocumulus or cirrocumulus at very high level. http://llandru.servehttp.com/strange_light/P2180887.jpg looking SW showing pollution haze http://llandru.servehttp.com/strange_light/P2180888.jpg looking SE showing strange light and complex cloud http://llandru.servehttp.com/strange_light/P2180890.jpg zooming in the cloud holds focus and is very detailed. Image was taken at 1650z. http://llandru.servehttp.com/strange...0_contrast.jpg Applying high contrast gets me this. NLC observers will recognise this immediately! It's obviously high atmospheric but very complex. Les |

Despite 7 oktas stratocumulus at 5000ft (sc perlucidus), the pink glow was very much in evidence shortly after sunset here here on Fair Isle. It was very much enhanced by the haze reducing the visibility to 12km. Rather interestingly, just before sunset, the sky took on a very pale lime green colouration that slowly faded to be overtaken by the orange glow at dusk. Dave Fair Isle |

But I guess it could have been a similar phenomena - differing refraction of light of different colour (wavelength) by the atmosphere. Dave Fair Isle |

I've seen it a couple of times outside the Old Success at Sennen near closing time. Both times it was very clear and I was specifically watching for it. It lasts just 1 or 2 seconds as the final bit of sun disappears. Graham Penzance |

I took this photo from the Control Tower at around 1745Z, but really wished
I stayed on another 10mins, as as I was walking back to the car, it turned into a brilliant orangy-red but alas no photo opportunities.... http://www.layton.me.uk/DSC00711.gif Phil |

Hello Graham
Yes, I recall (just about|) seeing green flashes (and blue ones) around closing time at Sennen Old Success some years ago. Do you think it's the local atmosphere? Peter J Hi Peter - there seem to be quite a few people from Sennen following USW! I always assumed it was the very clean air that made it visible, and looking west from Sennen there isn't much to cause pollution. However, layers of undisturbed warm/cold air over the sea surface at night might play a part as well. All the best Graham |
