Default One of the coldest winters for 21 years!

Strange as it may seem, only 5 winters have been colder than this one
by the looks of it in Coventry, even though the average looks like
being 1.1C above the 30-year climatological normal for 1971-2000.

Just goes to show how cold winters were in the 1970's!

I thought that up until the late 70's winters in that decade
were mild.

There were some cold winters in the late 1970's he

1976-77 2.9
1977-78 3.5
1978-79 1.4

but you are right!

My researcher let me down - this year's winter average is 4.5C, same
as the 30 year average, not +1.1C.

Can't get the staff these days:-)

Still likely to be one of the coldest winter's in thepast 21 winters
here - only 5 colder (90-91, 95-96, 96-97, 00-01, 05-06).

Yes, the period of mainly cold winters, going by the CET, was I think
roughly from 1976-7 to 1986-7. 1978 (Feb), 1978-9, 1981-2 (Dec and Jan),
1985 (Jan and Feb), 1986 (Feb) and 1987 (Jan) all had notable cold
spells in my part of the world (Surrey).

Blimey Steve are you sure?

I just had a look at my records and I've had at least 30 Winters colder
than this one just since 1971!!!

I've had at least 15 colder in the last 21 years!

There have only been 5 WARMER since 1988

2007, 1998, 1995, 1990 & 1989 and 1995 is only by 0.1c so 2008 could
still end up warmer than that!

My record begins with the 1991 winter, and like you, only 1995, 1998
and 2007 look like being warmer than this winter.

Are you sure?

My records show that this winter (for this part of the world) is likely to
be the 2nd warmest for the past 35 years (using Exeter Airport data).

Whhops!

I have checked out the figures used by my young researchers yesterday,
to find they had put the wrong figures into the Excel spreadsheet!

So, the average winter temperature looks like being 5.5C NOT 4.5C, so
only 6 have been milder in the past 21 years - some difference.

I should have spotted the error, but as we are in the middle of an
inspection right now, didn't make the time to check the figures.

Mea culpa - thanks to you, Col and Graham for the heads up on this
one!
