Don't do it, David! This is Usenet, not Google!

You can get a 'free for life' news account from Teranews
http://www.teranews.com/ but there's a one-off setup charge of $3.95
(about two quid). Seems to work pretty well, I have an account with them
which I've used from time to time.

I do when Demon newsfeed has one of its turns, don't like Google groups
though.
Cut and paste from notepad?
I believe in the simple life :-)

Why not renew it and set it up to be renewed automatically?

My work internet connection blocks the usual usenet servers, and I am
forced to use Google.

It's ok, more especially if you use the tree view, but you will get
large quantities of spam postings and you will be unable to killfile
anyone.

Very much agree with you. NIN is only 10 euros a year as well and is very
reliable. Already, I have killfiled Google posters in other ngs because of
all the spam that Google passses on. It won't take much more before I kf
Google in this ng.

Does your employer know? Must be very understanding!

There is a way round that block if you use NIN. Change the "Port" setting
from 119 to 8119 and it should work fine. I doubt they block 8119. This
is from NIN FAQs:

quote
1.13
My service provider blocks port 119! Is there an alternate port for your
news server?

Yes. If your provider blocks the standard NNTP port (119), or if he
degrades connections on this port, please change the port setting in your
newsreading software to port 8119.

Also they post in a format that Outlook Express cannot recognise to indent
correctly, which is a real pain. Google is useful as a News archive and in
an emergency when a proper newsreader is unavailable, but is more akin to a
web discussion group than Usenet.

.... can't join in the antipathy towards Google on this one. Have been
using two googlemail accounts (and access to the ng via Google) for
some time now and find it good. On the email accounts, spam is
automatically 'trapped' efficiently - only very rarely is mail
sidelined that should have gone to my inbox, and the newsgroup account
is not 'flooded' with spam - perhaps one posting per day is all I see.
The archive (both ng & email) is superb. Very useful.

If you want to risk the combined wrath of others here, these documents
will help you set up an account:..
