Default A Cold NIght for Late May

it's very cold in the Glens of Scotland presently, with a sharp frost
in some, but many areas South of the Scottish border will also be
waking up to an unexpected frost this morning. It wasn't really that
unexpected; it has been well forecast and late-May frosts are not that
unusual but a white covering on May 20th will still be a surprise for
many. I hope the gardeners protected their tender plants last night,
or there'll be tears by bedtime!

The threat of frost will decrease from now onwards, this week, though
tonight will still be cold in some Central and Eastern areas in clear
skies. The corollory of that is that the days will be extremely
pleasant for many and temperatures will on the rise again. Rising high
pressure has ensured that pleasant sunshine.

Low pressure then tries to make progress from the West, introducing
much more showery air, but the progress will, again be painful. This
Atlantic has been blocked for a month. Maybe the weather plunger will
be the ridging of the Azores High? A feature not seen for a fair old
time, but the gfs is hinting at that this morning.

Nothing looks remarkably warm at the end of May, but some warmer air
than we have at present may be pulled from North Africa around low
pressure to our South. It does not look a settled airstream however!
There's a threat of thunderstorms next week in that. Personally, I
don't see the weather for the Bank Holiday being quite as bad as is
being touted here and there. It'll be warmer, with the threat of
showers, but Easterlies may drive the fronts back West and I don't see
the same threat from low pressure over France, pushing fronts
Northwards, as was the case last weekend. If you miss the showers, it
could be barbie time!
