Default T/S Arthur ... first named storm of 2008 'season'

.... a bit of an oddity this one, but the season has started off.
Within the 'normal' time frame, as the North Atlantic/Caribbean season
is nominally 'opened' on the 15th May.

TROPICAL STORM ARTHUR SPECIAL DISCUSSION NUMBER 1
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL AL012008
100 PM EDT SAT MAY 31 2008

THE AREA OF LOW PRESSURE LOCATED IN THE NORTHWESTERN CARIBBEAN
BECAME A TROPICAL STORM AS IT WAS CROSSING THE COAST OF BELIZE
EARLY THIS MORNING. THIS IS BASED ON SATELLITE IMAGERY...SHIP DATA
AND A NOAA BUOY 42056 WHICH REPORTED SUSTAINED WINDS OF TROPICAL
STORM FORCE. INITIAL INTENSITY IS SET AT 35 KNOTS BUT BECAUSE
ARTHUR IS ALREADY INLAND..WEAKENING IS ANTICIPATED. THERE IS A
POSSIBILITY THAT ARTHUR REGAIN TROPICAL STORM STATUS IF IT MOVES
BACK OVER WATER IN THE BAY OF CAMPECHE.

This little tinkle is a nominal storm?

It was a Tropical Depression and now it is just depressing.

T/S "Arthur" has actually formed a day before the opening
of the North Atlantic hurricane season, Martin, which starts
tomorrow, the 1st of June. It's the East Pacific area that
commences it's hurricane season on the 15th of May.
Both regions seasons terminate on the 30th of November.

Regards,

Nigel

Well, they do and they don't! That may be the "official" end and start
to the season, but someone ought to tell the hurricanes and cyclones
that!

Accustomed as I am to t'sound.
However simple he may be,

The obvious and the clear must be.

.... sorry, I should have made it clearer: the 'season' for warnings
for both the Atlantic *and* NE Pacific used by the Met Office for the
issue of warnings starts on the 15th May. Not necessarily the same
dates as used by other services ... see he-

Certainly "a bit of an oddity" as it originated in the East Pacific as Alma,
then had a sex-change operation during its crossing of Central America.

There were a couple like it, one successful in 2005, IIRC. There is
time yet though as this spell is a short one and the next according to
the Weatherlawyer Hurricane Unforecast:
"...should install one. Quite a corker of a spell for it too. "

And this spell is or almost was a short one too as tomorrow will
install certain segments of the following already. Those that follow
me are fools, pay no attention to them.

(I poked Dawlish with a stick earlier but he is comatose. Rather like
the frontal parts of his cranial connectives.)

Now looks as though it's headed back to the Pacific. Wonder if it will get
yet another name if gets back to TS strength?
