Colin Youngs Brussels Lands End recorded 0.1mm yesterday ( www.landsendweather.info/ ) and that was a little early hours drizzle. The rainfall radar typically overstates rainfall on the Penwith (Lands End) peninsula. In particular there are occasions when there is a semi permanent 'shower' near Porthcurno. Scilly was wet, but it's not part of Cornwall of course. Graham Penzance |

It's just that the rainfall radar can be misleading, therefore it's best to check whether it actually rained or not. Graham |

Really? I'd always assumed offshore islands like Scilly would be part of their nearest county. So what kind of jurasdiction do they have there, are they effectively a 'county' in ther own right? .... the Isles of Scilly are administered by the Council of the Isles of Scilly, which is a unitary authority responsible for all the 'normal' council matters from education to rubbish collection/disposal. The islands are part of the Duchy of Cornwall, and the Duchy own a reasonable chunk of the buildings. The Duchy has owned (effectively) the islands since the 14th century. Even after 2009 April (new unitary authority for Cornwall), the IoS will not be subsumed into the administrative infrastructure of Cornwall. For all these reasons, a lot of people will tend to refer to the broader area of the SW peninsula (for geographic purposes) as " Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly ". I'm not sure the Shetland islanders like being regarded as part of Scotland - but perhaps that's another story ;-) Martin. -- Martin Rowley West Moors, East Dorset (UK): 17m (56ft) amsl Lat: 50.82N Long: 01.88W NGR: SU 082 023 |
