I don't recall this even happening in recent years, even when winds of
similar strength were forecast.

Ive not seen this before, but I guess they have learnt from the Low that
struck the SW of France on the 24th Jan causing the closure of a few
airports then.

We weren't such wimps when I was an airline pilot. Unless
circumstances were exceptional (eg runway closed by snow) it was, at
least in my airline, the captain's decision whether or not conditions
were within limits. I would have thought that tonight's forecasts
suggest within limits for many operators.

Perhaps they are concerned about debris, objects, blowing around on
the ground. But it sounds an unusual decision.

Worried about turbulence spilling the Champagne in First Class maybe

Looking at the metar history, the worst at de Gaulle (just behind the
cold front) was 27034G50KT (270 degs, 34 gusts 50 knots). That is
more or less straight down the runway so no serious crossswind
problems.

Before the front, 22033G47KT (220 degs, 33 gust 47 knots) so although
a crosswind, shouldn't have been a problem for modern aircraft.

It seemed to be a poor call before the event to close the airports -
it looks even less defensible with hindsight.

That was probably me "driving"! In the 1980s/1990s it was a regular
destination. I flew for Air UK.
