Default Rain in SE

It says something about the climate of the SE when 3mm of rain is
enough to get a thread going!

I know! 3mm - I get more than that in morning drizzle. But yes when I lived
in the SE *any* rain in summer was always welcome and worthy of a mention.
Different world to the SW.

Different world to the SW.

To your part of the SW Will.

I reckon here in 'dry' lowlands of south east Devon it can get pretty arid
too. The last 3 summers have not been typical.

I think my mean monthly rainfall for the summer months are lower for this
location than many parts of the SE. I remember posting something a while ago
about this.

The summers of 2005 & 2006 had the grass go brown and stop growing from
early June until mid-September. Things were also pretty desperate here this
year from May until early July with the lawns brown and soils dust-dry..
Then it rained and rained, and rained..........

Everything now quite dry again, but the sun's too weak to scorch the lawn.

Sounds awful!
Nothing like that up here of course, lawns have never turned brown since
moving here in 2002. They did go a bit pale yellow in 2003 when the grass
stopped growing for a couple of weeks IIRC.

Then it rained and rained, and rained..........

Everything now quite dry again, but the sun's too weak to scorch the lawn.

Dry here too, the farmer who owns the paddock next to me has been haymaking
the last few days, making the most of the dry spell.

Seems to have been much worse in the central south (I'm in
Southampton) than the southeast. Mostly light but seemed almost
torrential for a short while around 6.30pm. I have to admit I'm amazed
at how active this system, which just seemed to be a minor trough on
the south side of the high, has been. I genuinely expected no more
than occasional drizzle today - and I think that's what the forecast
said, away from the far SE.

Several flash warnings issued in the last hour
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/...ngs.html?day=1

Radar imagery shows a narrow but intense band eseentially slow moving in a
line from Essex to Dorset. The GM T+12 500mb/vorticity field suggests it's
loosely tied to a narrow strip of upper forcing on the northern flank of the
vortex over France

Now 33.8mm and still raining moderately.

Much flooding in the vicinity. Just done a training session with my running
club - absolutely soaked through.

6.3mm here at Guildford - the heavier stuff is just to the W of here. I
guess the thing that makes this 'threadable' rain is that when I looked at
the charts at the weekend, I thought there would be some showers to the
South of London - but hardly recordable. We get less rain with an unstable
westerly here!
