Default Dawlish: no snow, no frosty surfaces, but a dessicating northerly.

We've force 5 northerly, rocking the trees and it has dried things up
amazingly. A real drying wind. I could cut the grass later with this!
It didn't get below freezing in Teignmouth (0.5C min) and no scraping
of cars this morning. Missus has gone running but she's mad.

No frost!

Different world up here Paul, everywhere is frozen solid with a penetrating
moderate frost.
Still -2.7C at 0830 with a bitter wind (-3.1C at Postbridge higher up). This
bodes well for when the Atlantic air returns as the airmass at altitude is
jolly cold, I think we will get the hordes coming up onto the moor on Sunday
to sledge in the powder after the fall on Saturday night.

You seem so sure of this snow Will! The front running down from the
north seems to fragment on the model I look at. I know it is a
different world up your way, but it would make for an interesting
weekend scenario if it becomes more active.

The FNMOC shows a number of beefy, pretty deep, lows running up from
Biscay through Northern France/Channel around Christmas. I guess their
path is not too certain yet..

The 06Z NAE has a tongue of +4 theta-a air ahead of the cold front on
Saturday night :-

T+48 850 theta-w
http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-b...=0&PANEL=0&WMO

T+48 rain/snow discrimination
http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-b...0&ARCHIV=0&WMO

you'll probably be ok (for snow) up in the mountains, Will, but it looks a
bit more dodgy for those at low levels in the southwest, i.e. it may well be
a mix of rain, sleet and snow and less likely to accumulate.

Thanks Jon. I did say in my Dartmoor forecast that rain/sleet more likely
below 200m asl., with heavy snow above 300m asl. I did estimate wet-bulb
freezing levels to be around 400m asl so that would fit in with those
forecast theta-ws. A walk along the Hameldown ridge at 500m asl could well
be in order on Sunday, followed by some ale at the Warren House Inn to warm
up.

I had a look at the 1000/850 thickness and that gives about a 30-40% risk of
snow (Boyden) initially for low altitude if I've read it correctly..

http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-b...&ARCHIV=0&WMO=

however, the colder air is quickly digging in from the rear so I wouldn't be
surprised if it turns properly to snow before it all clears south, even at
low levels.

Advisory now out for widespread icy roads on Sunday

Ah, The Warren House Inn! What a refuge! You can come down from those
