[WR] Technical white Christmas, Leysdown
Well, I didn't believe it at first - but we had a few flakes of sleet this
morning, around half seven. It came at the end of the overnight rain as the temperature dropped to 3C (dew 2.2C, so I'm not really sure *how* it happened!). I drove up to Eastchurch (the neighbouring village), just to see if there was still lying snow from last week - and there was, albeit just remnants. On the way there were a number of telltale "splodges" on the windscreen. Yes, I know I'm mad but hey, I don't care! The sight of a few flakes falling for the first time in my lifetime on Christmas Day more than makes up for being out in what would otherwise be throroughly miserable conditions! The last time snow fell here on Christmas Day was 1970, the last time there was lying snow on Christmas Day was 1981. (nb, report comes from Leysdown, north Kent, 30m ASL. Lying snow is visible next to the B2231 on Jenkins Hill at Eastchurch, circa 70m ASL) |

Forgot to mention that if you have access to the NetWeather radar, the frame
for 7:20AM shows the back edge of the precipitation band well - it has snow over western Sheppey, sleet over eastern Sheppey and rain elsewhere over Kent. It looks like the event was very localised! |
