Default Today's event. (12/01/2010) 12z

The event is starting with rain into Cornwall but the MetO has taken
Cornwall out of its snow warning, leaving areas to the east of
Cornwall at risk. It'll be interesting to see if the rain turns to
snow over Bodmin Moor. Temperatures at 0.2C, with a dewpoint of 0.1C
on this website at Minions:

http://www.minionsboatclub.co.uk/weather/index.htm

Marginal snow there, but on the higher moor and on the A30 perhaps
rain turning to snow about now? The rainfall radar is a peach! Very
marginal whether I'll get my promised snow! *))

There is indeed, but it's currently 5C in Penzance, having dipped to
around 4C briefly during a particularly heavy burst of rain, so I
think you'll need to be east of Bodmin to get any (apart from some
sleety stuff). The snow & ice melted extremely quickly overnight.

The wind is a real feature, briefly reached Force 10 at Sevenstones.
It's one of those days when the wind seems to decrease particularly
sharply just inland. 64mph recorded at near Land's End. Out at
Mousehole this morning I recorded 56mph at shoulder height with a hand
held anemometer, whilst my 10m roof top anemometer in Penzance has so
far peaked at 47mph. Seems to be dercreasing now. The direction of the
wind means there's lots of bits coming off trees which down here have
a distinct lean away from the normal SW direction.

Seriously big sea running now. http://www.minack.com/webcams.htm

Just waiting for the rain here in Dorset - currently 1.3C and steady
for the last 2 hours and a DP of -0.8C. Quite nippy in the wind it
must be said

Semantics and clarity for the public eh? There appears to be an
advisory Jon, which I think indicates 60% confidence that something
will happen and in MetO severe warnings speak, is not an early warning
(orange) but is an advisory (yellow), which had been in force until
this morning. Whether that still constitutes an warning, or only now
means an advisory - which I suppose is a type of warning (or is it?)
would be about as clear as the proverbial to the general public.
Helpfully for the public, the colouring on the map has changed from
orange to yellow for Cornwall, which certainly involves a downgrade; I
think. 80

A reminder you of the Pitt Review, P329,

21.12 "credibility of the sources of warnings needs to be attended to
or attempts to improve methods and messages will be undermined.
Evidence to the Review shows that there is often a lack of
understanding about warnings and, when false alarms are issued, the
public feels that there is not always adequate explanation
afterwards."

Worth a read.

Advisories are issued when the risk is assed at between 40 and 60%. There's

Again, Jon; I know. There's a way to go to implement that particular
part of the Pitt report, for sure.
