Well heavy as in weight, it seems the Highland Gliding Club has suffered
badly from the recent snow, lets hope they are up and running again soon.

Well, with another hat on, it so happens that I am the treasurer
of the Highland Gliding Club.

Thank you for your concern, Robbie.

We have received offers of help in the form of loans of aircraft
from three different sources, so as soon as the snow (and the
ephemeral loch in the middle of the airfield) are gone from the
airfield, we will be flying again.

We are fully insured for the hangar and the damage to the
aircraft, so we are fairly confident that we will recover from
this blow.

I'm confused. I'm sure I used to glide with that club many
moons ago (early 80's) but I'm sure I used to go somewhere
round (north of?) Fochaber.

Is there another gliding club nearer Fochaber?

We moved in 1991 from Dallachy, which is about four miles north
of Fochabers, to Easterton, which is about four miles south of
Elgin.

Ahh Ok. Looked at google earth again and the closest I can come
to, that triggers any sort of memories is the field on the
eastern most edge that borders on the southern-most taxiway on
RAF Dallachy (with the trees in the NE corner). I did look at
GE after Ridge Runners post but didn't recognise anything, and
thought I might be looking in the wrong place. There certainly
is no longer any sign of the hanger that I remember being
there. ( 57°39'11.22"N, 3° 3'29.72"W is where I'm looking, I'm
probably well lost).

I was only there about half a dozen times or so over the course
of about a year and a half, and didn't get to know anyone
really, but I do have some fond memories of the realisation
that gliders were somewhat more sophisticated, and touch
sensetive, than the ones I was trained in at RM condor.

Ah memories...

Quite a few farm sheds collapsed as well, some of them killed animals
and/or injured farm workers. The hanger at Aboyne collapsed as well but
AFAIK the contents were all undamaged.

Yes. The Aboyne collapse wasn't the main hangar. It was a small
privately-owned one-glider hangar, and the owner was able to get
the glider out unscathed before the roof finally fell in.

I read that one estate had six farm buildings collapse. It was
very lucky that no-one seems to have been seriously hurt, though
one man was trapped for a while under a collapsed roof.

Sounds about right.

See http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6905. The gliding strip was
on the perimeter track and adjacent dispersal bays on the right.
(The CFI was very unamused by this photo, which was taken from a
single-seater glider turning finals.)

The hangar that you remember was beside the trees at the far end
of the strip. It was dismantled and re-erected at Easterton, and
is the one which has now collapsed.

Ahh yes, that's it. It was the gorse that triggered the near
instant recollection. There was always someone in amongst it,
watching the gliders. (And getting buzzed by them at least
once, I recall).

I never did do a solo there, having gained my license at 662
some 5 or 6 years previously. I was there all to infrequently
and was kind of used to the more forgiving controls on the
smaller yet heavier Sedberghs' and MkIII's that I was trained
in.

Is that the winch I see at that end? I don't recall ever taking
off or landing to the west. It was always towards the sea.

lol. Did the CFI know from which glider it was taken? There
might be some suggestion that perhaps it was maybe yourself
possibly in that glider, perhaps?

'tis a shame. Still, it has obviously had a long service.

Snip

Thanks for the extra information. I've seen a picture of the inside of
this hanger with the roof just shy of the trailer fin, presumably with
the glider inside the trailer.
