A lovely day today http://www.sennen-cove.com/lbtdy.htm and
http://www.nci-stives.org/basiccamera.htm after yesterday evenings rain. (8.8mm in the 24 hours to 09:00) Lovely sunrise as the last of the frontal cloud cleared to the east. Cornwall's had a rather different climate to the rest of the UK lately. Todays the 8th consecutive day with an above normal maximum temperature of 10C. (Only just made it yesterday - 10.1C late evening). It now looks like being less cold overall than Jan'97. It's also been a sunnier than average month. Great for suckers who want more than just a gap http://www.turnstone-cottage.co.uk/ Graham Penzance |

It's also been a sunnier than average month. The other feature of this month besides the long cold spell is the dullness since the 10th. I was away over the weekend 16/17th, so can't really comment on that, but besides that, the only significant spell of sun in Southampton since the 10th was a few hours yesterday, from about lunchtime to sunset. All other days (except 16/17 which I can't comment on) have been very cloudy. By contrast the first 9 days were sunny - I guess the rest of the month will depend on whether the imminent high will be cloudy or clear. I'd imagine that round here this will end up as the coldest January since 1987, assuming 4 cold days next week from around Sunday to Wednesday. ISTR 1997 was cold until the 10th, but the rest of the month was average or slightly mild - while this year each of the first 14 days were cold and only Saturday to Monday, so far, have been actually mild. One of the reasons I moved to South Devon was to escape the winters in Yorkshire and I've never regretted that. Mind you I've learned, since moving here, that Devonians view Cornwall as not so much as a different county, as a different country! (Most Cornish people, of course, know full well that they live in a different country!!) *)) Almost springlike at times today in Dawlish. Top temp of 9C in nearby Teignmouth: http://www.greatweather.co.uk/teignmouth/current.html The sun only peeped through for short periods though. Good enough to work in the garden for a couple of hours this afternoon - but rather muddy! |
