Default First thunder of the year

10.30 this evening, and as (bad) luck would have it, I was out with the dog.
Some magnificent arcs across the top of the cloud bank approaching from the
north-west. Quick scurry back home since herself was none too happy about
it. All quietened down for now.

Just plugged the AWS into the computer, and the temperature at 10.50 was
19.5C. Now 11.10, and it has risen back up to 20.0C, and still rising. A
very uncomfortable night in store I would imagine.

The Mrs phoned from Bedford and said there was thunder around so when
I checked the radar I was suprised to see the stuff that developed,
over a short period, Rugby area and running north east.

A rather refreshing 14C outside

It's been ****** unpleasant here in Stoke since the spell started. I
hate this about British summers.

A storm passed about 3 miles to the north of here this afternoon - all
we got was about 30 seconds of heavy rain, though.

With such a long lasting Atlantic anomally I suppose it is worth
reapraising events. No doubt this persistent anticyclonic weather over
Greenland, we shall have to get used to short lived weather phenomena
until the ice depth is rebuit?

Whatever the cause or case, the fact that storms at sea/ground surface
levels are short lived at the moment is due to the flaccid nature of
sea level pressures; is that not so?

I think that is the steam railway that is now - or will be - linked
with Cheltenham racecourse? Or a station near it I should say!

That lot arrived here just before 5 o'clock this evening. Torrential rain
for about 20 minutes, but luckily no thunder. It dumped 6.0mm, with a peak
of 27mm/hr. [Note to me: much more rain like this and I'll have get up there
and seal the joints on the guttering. It plays havoc with the hanging
baskets on the back of the house.]

A 10 minute shower a couple of hours earlier caught me out with the dog
AGAIN! She has a lot to answer/be thankful for.

It's already linked to the racecourse, unfortunately, they've had a
landslip and the trains only goto Gothrington at the mo.
