The locally well-known hot spot in Brazil - Teresina - is currently
getting those Moscow-like temperatures in its "winter" - highs up to
36C+ in the forecast, July average being 33.2C. Salvador temps are
normal at 25-26C. Brasilia highs predicted for next 5 days 27-28C,
above the average of 25C. Rio highs next 5 days in the range 24-27C,
at or above average. I recall that in July 2007 there was a lot of
publicity re colder temps in Argentina and Chile - and none about the
warm anomalies further north, where I was staying.

Yes, I mentioned this a couple of days ago. The new record is likely
to be broken again this week. 100F is likely. 40C is not out of the
question!! Quite incredible weather.

Just shows what the weather can do to surprise us. I mean look at the summer
of 1666 http://booty.org.uk/booty.weather/climate/1650_1699.htm smack in the
little ice age with the following winter very cold with severe frosts.

Funny old weather really.

Moscow and western Russia just won't cool. All sorts of problems with
wildfires:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-10836281

.......and the 5-day forecast is in the high 90's, then 100F Thurs +
Fri and peaking around 40C again on Saturday. Their new temperature
record could be beaten again. Quite amazing temperatures.

Still no let-up for the Muscovites; made worse by the wildfires and
the smog they are producing.

I see that it could be about to have a significant effect on the world
economy, following Russia's being forced to cease exporting wheat:

Let's hope so, as with the flooding in Pakistan doing a lot of damage to
their main agricultural area, the poorer countries of the world might be
in trouble and the richer ones paying a lot more for their food.

I believe the UK is a major exporter of wheat (and barley), and I would have
thought that this year would yield a bumper crop. Canada is one of the
world's largest exporter along with the US, and they must be having a good
crop this year as well.

I cannot imagine that the shortage from Russia is going to have much effect
on the world's wheat prices, but I am far from an expert!!

Though the Outlaws have said that flour is currently selling for 2 euros a
kilo (just gone up 30%) in Portugal and bread is more expensive there than
here. In the UK the price seems to have dropped over the last 12 months.

I think energy costs are also involved but again, I'm no expert.
