I'm watching this in shock. Goodness knows how many must have died.
The footage of the tsunami is just horrendous. http://www.rferl.org/content/japan_e...i/2334658.html My heart just goes out to Japan today. |

Terrible, the aerial stuff of the ten foot or more wave slowly and relentlessly flowing across flat farm land destroying everything in its path is, as you say, horrendous. There are a few vehicles driving about one I notice trying to make a dash for it but getting cut off. I didn't see people running but no doubt people were dieing down there. Being shallow and relatively close to the coast I wonder how much warning people would have had? Japan does educate it's people very well about earthquakes and has a good warning system. There doesn't seem much activity for mid afternoon, so hopefully most of the population have manged to "run for the hills". They won't have much but firewood to come back to though. My heart just goes out to Japan today. Hopefully the tsunami warning will be heeded by other countries around the Pacific basin. -- Cheers Dave. Nr Garrigill, Cumbria. 421m ASL. |

I just happened to be snuggling back in bed watching the news, after chatting with a dear friend in Los Angeles, when the news began to trickle through. Later on I was reading news articles about the subject when I followed a link to the 'Daily Wail' about earthquakes and a 'super moon'. http://www.tne.co.uk/short-url/7 (safe URL shortener, I promise) A blog on Accuweather covers it as well... http://www.tne.co.uk/short-url/8 So far I feel that it is highly unlikely. -- Wendy Tinley Sheffield |

I saw the first video footage this morning and I have to say I was just in awe of such immense forces destroying all the efforts of humans in such a devastating short period of time. I would guess that many due to Japans technical preparedness and wealth would have had some tsunami warning time but boy oh boy what a sight. Of course this now has to be the most witnessed, the most powerful Tsunami ever witnessed in human history. Japan is the third largest economy in the world but that is going to put some massive hole in the wealth of the country Maybe those Mayans were right or they simply never paid the printer for the 2013 calendar. Lets hope the latter because in the thin varnish that humans live in on the surface of the plane,t todays event is a sobering realisation just as to how insignifigant we are in a straight head to head with nature, |

The worst disaster nature could throw at us in this country is probably a 1953 style storm surge. But that's nothing compared to the devastation caused by this. -- Col Bolton, Lancashire 160m asl |
