Hear, hear.

Presenters on national broadcast networks should not be making
comment about any conditions local to them. Local conditions should
be kept for the local/regional opt outs or stations.

I and the vast majority outside the SE have no interest what so ever
in knowing that it was raining during the rush hour in the SE. Do
they mention when it rains in Manchester or Birmingham? No, so why
mention it for London?

I have to laugh at that phrase "rush hour" or "morning rush" . Up here it is
"rush hour" when more than one car is waiting at our road junctions!
LOL.
I get back home from work at 5-00PM after a leisurely drive and it is all so
quiet, is that the evening rush hour?

Yep and a traffic jam is more than 3 cars in a line waiting for
something to come up Front Street through The Narrows that have
priority to the uphill traffic. You might get stuck for at least a
minute. B-)

Not to the extent that you do, no.

The divisive attitudes in this country annoy me, of which you bringing up

I've mentioned it a grand total of *two* times in the last few weeks.
Hardly bringing it up at every opportunity.

If you'd replaced the word "southerners" with "people in the
media" the complaint would have some force but as it stands it makes
no sense at all to the average Londoner, who is well aware of the
privileges of living there and is not in the least dismissive of the
north. Most of us know too many northerners for that. I seem to
remember posting something very similar in the past in response to
your imagined view of the contemptuous attitude of southerners. It
doesn't exist! Maybe your rage should be directed against a political
and cultural system that has caused the inequality, and one person in
particular.

* * *My annual rainfall is greater than Manchester's. *The new
reluctant new inhabitants of Coronation Street will find it cooler,
though.

I am only a little surprised to hear that. I know that areas to the
south of London are quite wet compared to surrounding areas,
conversely the Lancashire plain and especially Chesire is not
as wet as one might think.
The big difference I think would be rainfall *duration* rather than
absolute amount and this is what will have more impression
on people as it's either raining, or it's not.
There will be many days up here with hours of relitively light
rainfall, I would imagine you would have generally more intense
rain, but lasting a shorter time.

I believe Manchester's annual rainfall is 820mm per annum. This
compares with 1219.6mm in Penzance (1981-2010 average).

Just thought it was time to expose the urban myth of Manchester being
very wet.

I am aware of this but Bolton is wetter than Manchester, I've
lived in both so I know
See my reply to Tudor but I think it rains longer but with less
intensity up here which probably helps perpeptuate this myth.

Again, lumping a large group of people into one stereotype. That is the
sort of thing I expect in the comments section of the Daily Mail; it is
depressing to see it on a scientific newsgroup.

It is a generalision for sure and obviously not all southerners
feel that way but it is certainly the impression I get. As Tudor
points out, we can blame the media but if that is the case
you can understand people upp north feeling the way they do.

this thread just seems to be descending into hostility now.

You are probably right. We have made our points.

And no, I don't see the point in having the same argument
with the same people every few weeks.....

I don't that's avoidable, as long as we continue to subscribe to the
