I think this weekend has just confirmed my view that the summer June/
July/August 2011, has been abismal! This whole weekend I've been at
the Southend Garden Show, tomorrow as well, and although showers only
appeared about 14:30 on both days, I can't believe how cold I've felt.
In fact today I put my long johns under my trousers, had a vest, T-
shirt, sweat shirt and fleese and still felt cold. My comment to some
of my colleague exibitors was "Not a bad day for December"

My figures for the three months are not good reading:
June +0.4°C mean, 228% rain, 105% sun.
July -1.7°C mean, 170% rain, 101% sun.
August (To date) -0.5°C mean, 141% rain, 82% sun.

Perhaps I'm just getting old!

It does depend on what you want to do though Keith. I have done a lot of
walking this summer, in fact a *lot* of walking and the weather has been
perfect. Not too hot and not too sunny are good conditions for walking.
Endless cloud and rain aren't, but at least here in the SW, wetter spells
have been interspersed with sunnier breaks. It's also been a good summer for
the veg. plot and for the flowers. Just enough rain and sun to keep things
growing without the risk of drying and shrivelling. My runner beans are just
about to crop and I have never seen such a bumper harvest. Walking round the
coast, holidaymakers have been making the best of things as one must in a
British summer!
Never mind we have a whole winter to look forward to :-)

That does depend on your preferences though; I also like walking but I
prefer lots of sun as it brings out the aesthetic beauty of the
countryside. Of the walks I've done this spring and summer, the ones
which I enjoyed the most were those in sunny and warm weather. For
example, of the 10 or so "proper" walks I have done since the end of
July, my favourite was a walk on the Hampshire downs on Aug 3rd, the
cornfields looked beautiful in the hot sunny weather. I guess I'm just
more tolerant to heat than most, I walked 20 miles with little ill-
effect on Aug 10th 2003 for instance.

And my attempt to do the Watzmann Traverse in Germany last month was
spoilt by bl**dy unsettled weather! ;-)

I agree, it's been abysmal - very few warm days at all. I could probably
count them on one hand and have fingers left over. I reckon we've only had
half a dozen odd days which have crept over 21°C since the third week of
April, and only two or three that would qualify as pleasantly warm. Very
disappointing!

It's failed my bare foot test completely. I've not been able to nip out
onto the lawn or out the front to the Ice Cream van at all in bare feet
this year. Such a pain having to put something on your feet :-(

It must also prompt a reappraisal of long-term forecasting, from a
range of agencies and individuals. There is some humble pie to be
eaten, but instead, most will simply try to hope people will forget
their summer efforts (and winter 2010 etc. etc. ) and carry on as if
nothing happened. indeed, I'll bet people like PWS get newspaper
inches in the usual rags when they issue their winter forecast - as if
they can actually forecast at 1-3 months and we should take notice of
them. *))

It has been pretty dire here. Just 10 days where we got to or above
21C and 25 C maximum on June 4. Rainfall way, way above average.

2 torrential downpours that dumped 87mm on us.
