Temperatures in a location go up and down, just like ice cover, just
like daily global temperatures. You think they mean something and you
always cherry-pick when they fall. It's utterly stupid of you to do
it, as they always recover.

Geddit?

Why bother recording the data then?

Because that's how you accurately identify trends. Remember that climate is
'average weather' - temperatures and ice cover go up and down because the
climate system has cycles and stochastic variability, but if the climate is
stable then *average* temperature and *average* ice cover will vary little
over long periods. Global warming and climate change are identifiable in
significant changes to these averages. Without the detail it's not possible
to see the big picture, i.e. to identify trends.
