Penzance - Exciting Weather

A prolonged period of strong-gale force winds has now eased. Still
very windy in torrential rain/hail showers.
Bit less wood on the trees, and more lying in the garden this morning.

Recent gusts locally include 67mph at Land's End at 7:16, and 56 knots
at St. Ives at 8:53, so still distinctly blustery, but lulls in
between the squalls.

29.2mm of rain in the 24 hours to 09:00.

That little low late Wednesday is one to watch. Features like that
tend to give wind speeds exceeding predictions in west Cornwall. A
short period of severe NW gales can result as the wind is funnelled
around Land's End.

As you say, it's shaping up that way. Long time since we've had the
prospect of day long blizzards, a day of slush and a mild spell. All in
a week.

Swell's been building all day, and is now very large E.g. Perranporth
for a change http://www.channelcoast.org/data_man...arts/?chart=76

Boats are pulled right to the top of the slip, as the breakwater's
only providing limited protection now. http://www.sennen-cove.com/harbourcam.htm
.. Swell now 20' at Sevenstones and increasing.

Graham
Penzance where there's been a lot of hail in the showers.

I see that a 20.4 metre (67 feet) wave height was recorded by a buoy off
the coast of Donegal this afternoon.

The MetO is now forecasting the only really strong winds in west
Cornwall to be associated with that low.

Just noticed, the strong winds on the forecast (for Cornwall) are all
for Weds & early hours of Thursday. So gusts to near 70mph for
somewhere like the Lizard http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/...t_weather.html
lunchtime today & overnight tonight with no warning. Thursday & Friday
nights forecast to be much quieter, with a warning.

This happens a lot, covering all options?

(Last time I queried with the MetO why there were 70mph gusts & no
warning I was told that was not 'The threshold value' for a coastal
location)
