Dunno if anybody else keeps an eye on this station ,,but according to todays
figures there was not even a frost last night ,that must be almost
unprecedented for January ,are there any figures around to confirm that ?

Funnily enough, it's one of my favourite webcams, as is this one which has a
360º camera. By the end of the month, there should be the first glimpses of
twilight in the southern half of the sky around midday.

On the subject of webcams, anyone seen the folk of iceland taking to the
natural hot springs, with snow on the surrounding hills!

What I forgot to add to my previous post was the fact that temperatures in
Svalbard, particularly on the southern side of the archipeligo, can
fluctuate quite markedly. January temperatures can drop to seriously low
bone-chilling digits, BUT, they do come under the influence of the remnants
of the Gulf Stream. As such, even at their high latitude, temperatures can
be much higher than they would otherwise be. The sea lanes from the south
remain mostly navigable all year round, unlike the northern side which
becomes ice-bound.

Regards... David Allan.

David, another link from Iceland, what a changeable climate. Nice
volcanic profile from Hekla as well and see Geysir go.

I went to the hot springs in winter a few years ago. I was quite amusing
to watch snow falling past your nose and have the rest of you immersed
in hot water.

If there is no cloud, you should begin to see the first signs of twilight to
the south from late morning to early afternoon. Didn't actually see the
webcam at lunchtime today, but I have noted previously that the light on the
horizon ccan usually be spotted any time now. Then, gradually, it will go
from 24 hour darkness to 24 hour daylight... must be a strange place to
live.

Yes, and the period that the day/night duration seems 'normal' to
us is pretty brief, just a few weeks centred on each equinox.
