Default Good forecast from the UKMO

Well despite the models doing their own thing and chopping and changing
quite a bit over the last week or so the UKMO have been very accurate
with their forecasts this week, at least they have for my region. Will's
appraisals of the situation in the last few days have also proved pretty
accurate and helpful as have Darren's.

Hi Dave,
Excellent for us also! Having to reply on the phone and letting you
know no google getting through to readers! Didn't get to dancing last
night although I believe it was still on!! I'm a wus these days! Roads
all cleared here by midnight.

The timing was bang on here in Harpenden Herts, and forecast 5-10cm turned
out to be 13cm.

I agree Dave credit where it's due, it was just about spot on!
And a great effort as you say from Will and Darren.

We ended up with 11cms but thawing now as the temperature is up to 1.3c
Doesn't compare to the 45 cms we had on February 5th 1968 but still a good
effort
Great to see all the young people clearing our hill, so we should be able to
get out for lunch today as it's my birthday

Accurate here in Portsmouth too - As was forecast for coastal areas, just
cold rain with barely even a hint of sleet in it.

10 cm here. Rather more than expected. It was always forecast to be
2-5cm on lower ground in this region, as I'm at 'moderate' ground I took
5 cm as being the forecast depth. The 5-10cm forecast was for high ground
only in this region. It also didn't turn to rain on the back edge, but I'm
quibbling over details really, it was a pretty good forecast, especially
with the timimg.

I say that there was no rain but mid-afternoon I suspect that there was
a period of freezing rain. The snow stopped for about half an hour
and then the precipitation was in the form of icy pellets. I think there
was some freezing rain mixed in with this as the snow surface took
on a crusty appearance, despite the temperature still being around
-2C at the time, there was also rain on the windows. After this the
snow started again but I was out in it and it seemed rather icy in nature.

Very slow thaw now underway but I figure the snow will last a
while as this is only a partial thaw, in no way is the Atlantic going
to come roaring back in this coming week.

Perfect 10/10 for met office forecast of 10cm snow, but as I said in another
thread, no bloody gritters out till after midnight.

So why is this?
They can't claim that they weren't warned, the forecast was
broadly correct. Yes, it took until 48hrs before the event
for the Met Office to 'firm up' on the details, but this should
have been more than ample warning.

We have had gritters out some nights with a dubious frost forecast, yet last
night every man and his dog knew it was coming and the timing was spot on
